Replace backsplash?

I need some opinions. We did a complete kitchen reno in 2011. I made one big mistake (I now think) and that was being talked into a dark backsplash with the dark brown cherry cabinets. I was hesitant from the beginning on this tile and it's my fault totally that I didn't take more time to think it over. I am considering redoing it in a white or cream subway tile. I would like something very simple that won't compete with the granite and will also lighten up the kitchen. I'd love some opinions on this and what you think I could expect to pay for this to be done. The tile itself will be much less than the original tile but based on what one installer told me, we would most likely have to cut out the drywall and re-drywall before tiling. What do you think a job like this might cost (ballpark). Thanks so much for your feedback! I am attaching a photo of my kitchen with the dark brown tile and an inspiration picture I like to give an idea of what I am thinking.

Your current tile coordinates nicely with the rest of your kitchen. If you want to lighten it up, a new backsplash will do that, but please make sure you don't go too white. I think the backsplash in your inspiration picture is actually too white for the counters (the off white accessories in that picture go nicely with the counter and shows how the backplash is too cool for the kitchen). I would, instead, pull the lightest color from your counter (probably a cream or warm off white) instead of going super-white.

Hi - I don’t have an idea of cost, but I think simple white subway tile would be an improvement in terms of lightening up your kitchen.

At the time the granite place we got it from called it Magic White. It's white and cream but with some variation (or flow, which was big at the time) in colors in white, gray, tan, even some rust color and a couple of dots of burgundy. Overall it's been a great countertop material to have.

I love your kitchen. I would keep that backsplash. Your kitchen works beautifully. You could probably update the splash, if you like. Realize square tile is trending now, so maybe a crackle finish square tile in a lighter color?

You're welcome. When you find a couple tiles that you like, make sure to bring samples back to your home and place them perpendicular to your countertop to fine the "right" off white/cream color for your kitchen.

I think your existing tile has more character than boring subway tile, but I will be in the minority. Maybe my aversion comes from a childhood visit to NY and I remember the smell of the subway....
