I've had real red oak floors in my laundry room for 10 years with no problems. Can't comment on engineered wood as I dislike it.

I debated this question also and ended up tiling the laundry room. We did speak to our flooring professional and were strongly recommended not to use the engineered hardwood due to risk of water damage. I'm assuming you are concerned about the aesthetics. Pick a tile that coordinates nicely with the wood and have reassurance that your floors will be better protected in a flood.

Sooner or later, something may/will leak. We have vinyl flooring in our laundry room, and was glad we did when our old washer kicked the bucket. Not sure I would want wood of any type, personally. Looks beautiful but not practical.

If you do it, you will want both the leak alarm system (which is something you want in kitchens anyway) AND the overflow pan under the washer. And then you will also purchase enough flooring to refinish the ENTIRE laundry room in the future. Which means you will need the regular 5% waste + the laundry room 'extra'. At that point...it will become the same price as a tile floor.

I put wood in my last home in the laundry/mud room. I am not doing it again. We always used the mud room door to go in and out including letting the dogs in and out. The wood just didn't hold up to this type of use. Even with a rug, the flooring looked 10 years older than the rest of the house. Doing a wood look tile in my laundry/mud this time!

When we built I was just going to continue the wood floor thru the kitchen to laundry room. Which is also the mud room and bathroom. I chickened out at the last minute and went with tile. So glad I did, forget leaks I just spilt bleach on the floor this morning, tile didn’t care.

I would not do it. I know this floor is supposed to hold up to water, but it is still wood. You will see every spill that hits the floor, even water. If you are going to use a front loader wood is not the best foundation for it to sit on.

Just begging for trouble. Put in something that a mop or wet vac will fix.
