Spent Sedum blooms mark the plants in the yard during a snowy winter and give hope for a coming spring, or so I’ve read.

Chris before I even read your post my first thought was ‘oh how pretty, but the aftermath’. I always wonder what people do in your situation because like you said there’s these huge bald spots and it can be just a mess in the way it looks. What are your plans when the flowers are spent?

It is beautiful tho. Enjoy it while it lasts:). I bet you’ve got bees and hummingbirds buzzing around.

I have sort of a similar thing going on. A big Aeonium bloomed and has left this unsightly hole. Hopefully this winter will bring some growth.

cactusmcharris, love what you said about it giving hope. Very appropriate considering their tenacity to stay alive in very extreme conditions (a cycle of heat and drought, then freezing temps.

Kara, Someone suggested to me that I prune them back the minute they start to show an inflorescence but this didn’t make much of a difference (I did it on another clump). i intend to slowly replace this patch with Sedum ‘Angelina‘ as they’re more colorful and has significantly less tendency to bloom (at least in my experience). I already have propagated several clumps in 4 inch pots so I’ll just stuff them in bare spots.
