Echinopsis chamaecereus root issues?

Hi everyone!
I received this wonderful plant from my great grandma before she passed (she knew how much I loved it growing up). She said she had it for over 65 years. Anyways, I've identified it as such and started plucking some of the dead ones off. While doing that, I noticed how dead a lot of the roots are. I was wondering if anyone knew why it is like this and what I should do? Thank you all in advance ☺️

    Echinopsis chamacereus has fickle roots. Out of all the plants ive grown, this one has been the most challenging..

    However, your plant seems to be etiolated(not enough light), therefore , it wasnt healthy to begin with. If it was unhealthy, a minor disbalance could prove fatal...

    Another thing that i can see, is that the original rootball is standing above the rest of the soil in the pot. This leads to poor root health.
