Unwowed by Completed Powder Room

We just had the wallpaper put into our powder room to finish the remodel. It doesn't have the wow factor I was hoping for, but I'll have to work with it. My original plan was to put in a chrome towel ring and a chrome TP holder to match the faucet, but I think I like the look of the bronze to help balance the color of the wood vanity shelves. In this case, I think it might be okay to mix the metals. What do you all think? I'm also thinking about adding a couple wood framed prints above the toilet. Thoughts or any other suggestions?

love the straight on shots of the mirror, vanity, sink, and light fixture.

The over the toilet idea of a picture is a good one. Can you look in your community for a pieces, so you can try it out before you buy? I don't like the Wayfair picture. The image is too hotel/dr. office like. Get something catching.

I like the towel towel bar, under the vanity idea, in the same finish as you have. The frame of a picture can pick up the darker tones of your vanity and door. I like the clean and simple approach of your original vision on the previous thread.

Enduring, good advice. I'll look locally for a print.

Since the room is a bit more monochromatic, maybe the wall decor should keep the theme. I found these items on Wayfair that come in multiple sizes. Perhaps you can create your own expression on the wall.

Depending on how you combine them, they could be just 3 stacked items. or a cascade of items on the wall.

look for some better art. Etsy has great selections. you could even get one custom made to your exact specs. Buying mass produced art like that wayfair selection would be a downgrade for your beautiful bath/wallpaper

beverly gave another suggestion that could also work.

Because the decorative details are elegant but subtle I'd hunt for artwork that is more interesting than simply pretty. If you want wow, art with a lot of originality can help convey that.

I could see laying a towel on the counter when company comes, but not if this is a powder room that will see a lot of traffic for daily use -- hang a nice ring or bar near the sink and move on. You should be able to match the faucet set in feel and finish.

I'm not sure why, maybe it was the gold, but how about something like this over the toilet?

You have a small tray with paper towels. Leave that and get a small beautiful basket for under the sink on that shelf for used towels/trash. Art of your choice. Done. The powder room is beautiful all on its own.

I would not use a big ole ring for the hand towel. I small hook will do.

    Something minimal

Placing the hand towel hook low will keep water spots off your mirror.

Honestly, if I was a guest in someone’s home, I really appreciate disposable towels.... would much prefer wiping my hands on something no one has already used (even appreciate it among family members). They do sell “monogrammed” paper towels which would negate the need for a towel ring.

I second the disposable towel idea. However, I noticed you had them in your picture and thought you wanted to hang a towel, in spite of having these on the vanity.

if this powder room is strictly for guests, just do the paper ones.

In a powder room I alwyas use disposible towels I don’t want to dry my hands on a towel someone used . I also think the lighting is casting some pretty bad shadows maybe something with a more solid shade to eliminate that glare as for the rest of the space it is very nice.

That’s funny Patricia, I was thinking how pretty the reflected light looks in the powder room. No one will be doing their makeup in there so I don’t see a problem myself.

Agree with seajay.....I love the sparkly reflections on the wall.

Thank you for all the feedback and suggestions.

I agree that just having the paper napkins on the counter is probably good enough, especially since this room will only be used by occasional guests. So I'll just get a simple chrome TP holder and look for some art to put on the wall. No towel holder.

Patricia, I originally had an Edison bulb in the pendant which illuminated the room with just plain light, but we liked the sparkly look and decided we would keep it because, as others pointed out, nobody will be doing makeup in there.

I found these 9"x9" quartz "flowers" that look a little like the ones Beverly posted. They are white with a gold looking center. They only have this one size, however. Would it look good to stagger 3 (or 5?) of them vertically above the toilet? Or should I keep looking for something else?

What about some wood shelves on the wall behind the toilet? Thinking across the whole indent... Set some artwork and a plant on the top and rolled towels etc on the lower?

BeverlyFLADeziner, would you please post the link for the wall art you suggested? I'd like to get a better look.

mnmamax3, I also had the idea of shelves, but I'm just not a fan of too much tchotchke over a toilet. I think I'd prefer to keep it more simple.

Any opinions on the quartz wall "flowers" I found and posted?

I think I would prefer a print or painting to the flowers. I dont care for the petals, I feel like they would be a dusting nightmare. I had something similar once and they got dusty and then they shed.

localeater, I see what you're saying. I hadn't considered that. Thank you for the input!

I like the simple white flowers BeverlyFLADeziner posted, it gives some depth to the room, now it very pretty but flat. White gives the room some punch without being overbearing, which is difficult in such a monochromatic room.

Not a fan of the flowers....especially since you do have a lot of reflections on the wall from the lighting. Something less fussy (a simple print would look nice) IMO. It’s a pretty powder room and you don’t need much in there.

Your wallpaper makes this powder room "wow", imo. Everything is lovely. I agree to keep whatever towel holder inconspicuous and chrome is a good choice. For the art above the toilet, I'd take my time finding something I loved. Figure out a style you really appreciate and perhaps commission a piece via Etsy. Do you garden? How about a watercolour of one of your garden victories? Or a vintage b&w print of a city or neighbourhood you appreciate? The ideas are endless but they're more fun when they're meaningful to you. Anything you fancy can be rendered artistically. You can always frame a small piece to the size you need. I love browsing sites like dailypaintworks for small pieces. (The trouble with this avenue is the frame usually costs more than the piece itself.)

Nidnay and tartanmeup, what do you think of these prints from zgallerie? If you think I'm on the right track, I'll look for something similar because these are little more than I'd like to spend for above the toilet. I really like the first one, The North Shore, but not sure I should bring blue into the mix.

If you find them on the pricey side, keep looking. I'm sure you can find something in your price range that makes your heart flutter. Art is personal. It should call to you. You shouldn't be worrying about whether or not to bring blue into the mix. :)

Btw, here's a picture I found on Pinterest earlier with a small b&w photo framed with a large mat. If you find a small piece that delights you, you can frame it in a way to get the height you want.

tartanmeup, I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for the idea.

Still trying to figure out what would look good over the toilet in the powder room. So I went to Zgallerie intending on looking at some prints, but saw these metal flowers that come in both bronze and white w/gold tips in varying sizes on display in the store and really liked them! I decided I can live with an occasional feather dusting. I brought home 4 flowers: a large white, a small white, a large bronze, and a small bronze. I also brought home one extra large bronze, but I didn't even open the box because it looks too big for the space. Now I just need some help figuring out how many, what colors and what sizes will look good together on the wall. I took a picture of two being held up in the space, plus a picture of a configuration I did on the floor with all four flowers. I know that many things in decor typically look better in odd numbers so should I lose one and just hang three or should I hang all four? I could add a fifth one because there is room, but I think it might look crowded and would be overkill. Would love some advice on what would look best and if anyone can Photoshop them on the wall with the suggested placement, I would really appreciate it!

By the way, thank you, Beverly, for the flower idea! =)

Does anyone have any input about the metal flowers I posted earlier today?

    I like the white flowers..

I love your wall paper. It's a beautiful powder room!! The rule is odd numbers, but like how you have them on the floor. And get a REAL hand towel, paper will look cheap and flimsy. All this garbage is burying us!!

I think it looks great. I think sometimes when you have looked at something so long you get bored of it :)

The one thing I think could be updated is the toilet. I dont know much about them so maybe it is a really expensive toilet, but changing out the toilet for something more sophisticated could definitely help.

    Why the flowers?

I'm not a fan...I think they lower the whole look. Are you not wanting a picture? I would look for a really oversize one for that spot...

Pennydesign, I just like the 3D look and color of the flowers on the wall. I'm leaning toward one large white flower and two smaller white flowers staggered on the wall. I brought home one print and it was too big for the space. I'm going to see if I can bring home another print I saw online at zgallerie and I'll compare it with the flowers. One of the prints I'm considering is below.

I found this framed art at Z gallerie, in brushed nickel with real agate slices inside. I like it! Is it hung too high? Now I need to get a towel hanger and a TP hanger. Any other suggestions?

I like the framed agate. I am so glad you didnt get the flowers. It is hard to tell, but it looks a bit high. How many inches is the center off the floor? I think rule of thumb is 57 -60.

    drsaj thanked localeater

Thank you, Localeater. The center is 61 inches from the floor. Should I lower it a couple inches??

Yes, I think you probably should.

    drsaj thanked localeater

Like the agate a lot. A little lower is good. Why not a TP stand and not attached to wall. You have a tray of paper towels on the sink I thought. That’s all you need.

So I hung the frame at 58 inches to center from the floor, but it looked too low for the space. So I Googled how high framed art should be and the results gave me this from Martha Stewart:

A good rule of thumb is to hang art so that its midpoint is between 57 and 60 inches from the floor. Aim for the lower end of the range if most members of your household are on the short side; in rooms with ceilings higher than eight feet, artwork can be hung a little higher than 60 inches off the floor.Sep 25, 2015

Our ceiling is 10 feet high in the powder room so I think I'll hang it back at the 61 inches.

Seajay, thank you for the suggestion on the tp stand. I'll consider that.

I think the 61 inches to center looks better with something taller on the tank.
