What is attacking this tree?
We've noticed woodpeckers in this tree of late and then noticed the chipped bark. Thought it was the birds, but today I heard and saw bee like insects buzzing around and landing on the bark. They are not visible in the pics, but they are about 3/4 of an inch long. Any ideas? Is the tree in danger? Seems like quite a bit of bark is compromised and it's almost girdled. This tree was given to us by Mike in Renton (Botann on the old site, also I can't remember the trees name). Would hate to lose it as it's been growing here for close on 15 years.

After a bit more observation and research I'm pretty sure this is due to the Sapsucker Woodpecker.

Ours is the 'yellow bellied sap sucker' (Sphyrapicus varius). rarely seen, very skiddish and flys away as soon as it hears sound or movement. Don't give me time to yell. :-)
I put a sugar maple in now and they tell me something that flaps in the wind scares them away so I hung a blaze pink ribbon along the trunk. It moves every little breeze so hopefully that will do it. No trouble so far.
