Here is the space. I was thinking about doing a barn door, adding upper cabinets and a pantry, leaving a space where my daughter is standing, which would allow for the barn door to slide into. A pocket to allow for the door to slide

Similar to this, but rather than butting up the pantry to the corner, leave an inch or two for the pocket door to slide into.

You seem to be describing two different things - (1) a sliding door that would go in front of a door opening and (2) a pocket door that would slide into a pocket door opening. I’m not sure what you mean when you say ”split“ door in this context, but I think a sliding door could potentially work depending on the amount of space you have next to the door opening (ie is it enough for the door to live when slid open?). What are the room measurements? As for the pocket door, I believe that would require wall reconstruction.

Why not have a normal pocket door put in? You don’t even have to split it.

One problem with the barn door is that you will lose about 4-6” of cabinet space to accommodate both the door and the hardware.
