Brick Stain Recommendation

We are looking to stain the red brick on our house. Can someone recommend the manufacturer of a good stain? Preferably available in Canada? Or at least that can be shipped to Canada? We are hoping to tackle the project ourselves. Thank you!

What do you want to accomplish ..? Your house looks nice ...how about extending the stone work around the bottom towards the end of the garage first ...then look again if you want to paint or stain .., what is the look that you want ?

We want to unify the two sides of the house. I am not a fan of the red/orange brick next to the stone. We are thinking a taupe colour on the brick would help.
The home was built in the 1950s. The stone cannot be matched even if we wanted to do that.

I rarely suggest painting brick but if you love the stone then that rd brick needs to go so I would choose a color from the stone so if that taupe in is the stone it will work. I never like brick and stone mixed.Permatint is in Canada

Your best bet, if you don’t have a painting contractor you would normally use, would be to visit two of the larger paint stores in your area and discuss brick stain with them. It is their business, and they may have brick specialists to recommend. If stain won’t work, a professional paint job may work, but Houzzers often say painted brick needs maintenance.

Thanks. Does anyone have experience with Permatint?

Here are some close ups of my brick and stone. Permatint offers samples in the attached colours. Any recommendations? My windows are a cool white aluminum. Roof is red brown. Thank you!

Here is a post I made last year:

We ended up removing the brick, but this will give you an idea. I did not use the fixative and it lasted (without washing away) for months.

I'm thinking about ordering samples in these four colours. Thoughts? I may also decide to eventually stain the stone, but thought I would start with the brick.

I am considering this as well on my orange/reddish brick. Did it work? I am in Calgary, and No one here seems to do it!

    I was wondering the same!

No. Not yet! Hopefully this summer. I have only seen examples of painted brick in my neighborhood. I did buy some sample pots though and tried them on some sample bricks. Results are impressive!

I like the sand taupe best!

And thank you for sharing your experience with DYE Brick Anna. Looks great! Did you replace the brick after all? It is cool that you can test and then wash away!

@wickedwhite did you manage to get this project done this summer?

Did any of you get your projects done? What product did you use and how did it go? There is noone that does this in our area either so thinking of doing this ourselves?

    Looks great!

Its so hard to find info about staining brick. So many brick purists out there lol! Did you hand paint or use a sprayer? Is the final result a matte finish or does it have a slight shine to it? What made you choose Permatint?

I used permatint- It is cheap and they can color match to Benjamin moore, which helped me immensely choose the right color. While I used a stain that was too allow the color to seep through- I feel my orange did not show at all (3 coats) and it is identical to the color I chose with Benjamin Moore. My brick is very textured so it was time consuiming.

Hi there! We chose Permatint because they are local and were available. My first choice was Romabio, but we started the process last spring, in the height of the pandemic, and obviously, Italy had other priorities than brick stain. Permatint was okay though. We hand rolled two coats of transparent stain. Matte finish. Colour matched to a BM colour (not the best match but ok.) The stain is quite gritty so we were reluctant to spray, but I hear others had no issues May still go the romabio route, but for now, we are very pleased with the result. So much better than before!
