You may be able to "tone down" the traditional look with a fun funky light fixture or flooring that has some texture to it. Color advice is hard to give with the current photograph.

If you want to give the room some punch and feel more contemporary I'd find a wall covering which has some interest. I don't mean flying flowers! A great overall texture with some reflective feature. There are some great looking coverings which look like flecked granite, quartz or bronze. Change the floor to a porcelain. Install on a diagonal or with a patterned edge. Shutters for the window or a cool shade like a Roman. Just keep things clean, simple and impactful. Check out some of the new papers from Thibault.

I would get new modern toilet, travertin flloors, a nice aqua or toasted beige color on the walls, a nice mirror.
