Pecky Cypress Problems

I have done tons of research, but I have not found a solution to my problem. My home was built in 1980, and the den has pecky cypress walls and cypress ceiling in a very dark, orange/brown color. See photos. I really like the character of the wood, but it is too dark and makes the room look like a hunting cabin. I would like to be able to strip the varnish and stain and whitewash the wood to a lighter color. I would appreciate any advice. What is the best way to get the varnished wood ready to take a whitewash? Is this even possible? If not, how hard would it be to find someone interested in buying the wood? I don't want to get rid of it, but the room needs an update.

Thanks,
