Why plant asparagus crowns so deep?

I see rules for planting asparagus crowns 12 inches deep. Some say 8", I wonder, "why." Is it to keep the crown below the tiller? because I have a small raised bed and I weed by hand. Is it to stay below the frost line? because Iive in the south. Is it because the first 12 inches of spear tastes bad? HUH? To keep the crowns away from rodents? to support the spears so they don't fall over?

I can think of several reasons why 3-4" is a good depth. Why not?? Inquiring minds want to know!
