Need help with paint colors for family room. I do not plan on changing gray painted fireplace. This will be used as a dining room as well.

I would paint the ceiling a 'Ceiling White' which is flat to get more light into the room.

It's often recommended to not select the wall paint until you select the rug. Rugs that you like are finite in numbers, paint colors are not.

Decide which orientation is correct for the rug depending on your seating preferences and TV placement

I would go with white or off-white

A white would look nice, but something cooler toned because the current paint looks too yellow against the grey fireplace. Agree on waiting until you have your furnishings picked out though

We currently have red leather couches with gray chalk painted end tables and coffee table. The 9x11 carpet is only a year old and was pricey, so I would like to keep it. The TV will be on the wall with the French door. This is a picture of the house we just sold with the furniture and rug.

Also looking for suggestions to update kitchen. I am thinking about gray cabinets and a white quartz countertop or grayish granite. The appliances will be all stainless.

Pick a color from the rug then, one of the lighter ones. For the kitchen if you're going to make upgrades that flooring needs to be addressed as well. It's only going to look more dated the more you upgrade everything else.

So if understanding correctly, the sofa and rug will be in that room or you are using the rug in that room?

I think that for your kitchen, if you keep the flooring, I am not sure if gray will complement the tiles. You certainly see the color better than we will on our monitors. Are you painting the cabinets or replacing?

Sherwin William's has a color named grayish. I have used it with other grays, taupe, brown, white, purple....I guess I would say it adapts to other colors. Does that make sense? And I used it all over the house we sold and I am going to paint my walls the same in our new house. I also like a darker color for baseboards and trim.

I will be replacing floors in kitchen. Thinking about extending hardwood and staining same dark color. The cabinets are in good shape so I will just be painting.

Then it sounds good to me-- I just thought the beige tile in the kitchen was a hard color to read on a monitor but it did not look like it welcomed gray.:) Curious now to check out grayish.

I love the gray fireplace and think painting your kitchen cabinets the same gray will tie the two rooms together nicely. And with the white quartz you mentioned sounds divine! Your dark wood floors are amazing and should definitely carry through the kitchen. Can’t wait to see it Beth!

Oh, and you need to paint the white corner round on the bottom of the fireplace gray
