found Vintage bar, any info or advice?

I found this bar at a sale, it's gorgeous! but after years of sitting in a rental kitchen, it is very damaged. much of the veneer on the top is missing or lifted and ruined. I've tried looking for a similar item to guide a refinish, but not knowing anything about it, I'm not having any luck. there was a small part of paper on the back, pictured, but no other notations. on the left side is a door that opens to hold bottles, the right side of the main compartment has two drawers (with very cool pulls).

my plan was to clean the piece, repair the worst bits and paint them black, leaving it as original as possible; but my friend says I'm crazy and should try harder to stick to the period. But I don't know what that is!

If you are planning on using for a bar get a top made for it- absolute black granite or even a figured marble. This would be period, reversible, and give you a surface you can work on.

That looks totally cool! It looks like maybe art deco style? I would keep it.

Super cool art deco piece. Keep it as is and add a black or white/off white piece of marble or quartz to the top.

IMO this should be taken to a really good furniture refinisher to see what can be done I sure as heck would not paint it until you check that out. Black would be a color that would be appropriate but I would not ruin that piece until you find out for sure if it is possible to bring back at least the main body.

I agree with Patricia Colwell Consulting - if you can afford it take it to a professional. I've done plenty of furniture refinishing but veneers are difficult for me to work with. If you do refinish it yourself perhaps Jen Butler's and Hallett & Co's. advice to add a marble or granite top would be good to follow. You might even consider frosted glass as that would be an appropriate material for an art deco piece. It is an awesome bar! Good luck!
