"Dry Clean Only"

Hello all. Am hoping from some input from you laundry rockstars.

I bought a dress: My Dress. The fabric is listed as: Shell: 55% Linen, 45% Viscose Lining: 100% Polyester . And the instructions say "Dry Clean Only".

I am not shy about washing items that say dry clean only but they are usually sweaters, etc. I have never tried washing something like this. Is this really Dry Clean Only? Or can it be hand/gentle washed in cold, hung dry . . .

Would washing like that work or just ruin it? Would appreciate any advice.

Both fabrics will shrink if water is used, thus the dry clean only label.

Better dry clean linen or it will shrink. Also, washing can make the color run. Definitely dry clean only. And it still might shrink in the length a little but.

I don't know about the liner, but I have been washing linen all my life (I'm 74) and never had anything shrink. And certainly haven't had a color run in many, many years. I love linen and have a lot of it--shirts, blouses, pants, sheets (looove linen sheets), dishtowels, etc.

If you machine wash, the linen will shrink but the polyester lining will not. It will be misshapen as the lining will be larger than the linen shell. Do not wash it is my advice.

Isn’t there some home dry cleaning kit or product? I seem to recall something.
