purpose of this strucure?

so my dryer exhaust hose vents into this structure. nothing else vents in here. so what is the purpose of it. what is it called?

It is call the chimney.

Your dryer vents out the top of your roof?!? Normally it just punches out the side of the house.

This chimney probably used to be for your furnace and hot water heater. But then they got replaced and are more efficient so they can just vent out the side of the house instead of having to go up and out the roof.

It's possible that this chimney isn't needed any more.
