Foyer console decorating ideas

last modified: 7 years ago

I just purchased this cabinet for my foyer. I thought it was much darker it arrived and I'm a little disappointed in the color. Should I paint it? Possibly black or a darker gray? Or should I just add some decor on top to make it stand out a little?

Yes, you can certainly get more oomph from playing with decor on the top, but I do think the color is a bit lackluster for the space. If you want to keep the piece the same color, I suggest getting an urn that is a darker color, put it off to the side with a chunkier dark lamp, and get a round mirror with a dark frame. This piece can work but needs weight.

Also, is there another place in your home where the stools would work so you could put a darker colored chair their instead?

Although this eagle table looks nothing like yours, it is a similar situation in that the color blends into the wall. What works for me is having a bold mirror and objects on top that stand out.

Wow. How impressive that those fairly minor tweaks make such a difference! Moving the rug a few inches and re-arranging the wall decor to lign up --to me --makes the biggest difference.

Move the 2 stools they add to the paleness of the cabinet by making it look wider

It does look better moving those pieces around but I still am thinking it needs to be darker. Do you think a darker gray or black would look best?

No to darker furniture in this space. Not with such dark floors. Keep them just the way they are. Rearrange the pictures and find tall lights for the console. You've got most of what you need for this space already. It's just a minor tweak.

I'm hoping that will do it because I'm not exactly looking forward to painting it! lol

lori, do you possibly have a replacement for the stools in your stash of stuff? The space would look more complete if the stools or chairs were not light in color.

The cabinet is great, leave it as is. Remove the weird flesh coloured stools and the staggered framed art (never, never, never stagger art). Replace the mirror with a big round one with a narrow dark metal frame. Replace the rug with something with a pow of colour. Decorate your cabinet with a couple great lamps (be careful with the scale) and a big decorative bowl. And that's it. You don't need to add anything else to this great entry way. Don't over-decorate...

I would not paint this cabinet. I would add couple lamps, or sconces.

    Hmmmmmmmmmm. nope

I looked around but I don't really have anything darker to replace the stools but I will keep my eye out for something darker. I think that would really help. Do you think chairs or stools would look best in the space?

Could just as easily be two potted plants. Doesn't have to be stools, benches or chairs.

I inherited a brass umbrella stand that is in my foyer. I would have never thought to buy something like this myself but it is actually incredibly useful for when guests come to visit on a rainy day and need a place to put their sloppy umbrella. Maybe that could be useful in this space instead of the stools?

You can always get the stools reupholstered ... sometimes it makes sense and other times it is best to find new ones.
