Working with Heart Pine

Picked up this plank of Heart Pine from a local reclaim/salvage lumber yard. It is from a beam that in a factory built 150 years ago.

Cut it into equal lengths, put three coats of water based clear poly on it and here we are!

I'm going to use these as shelves and will be drilling into them to install the brackets. Is this wood brittle? Meaning will the screws shatter the wood? Do I need a pilot hole? And if so, what size and how deep?

The shelves are 33" x 14" x 0.875"
