Can this different pieces work together?

I am looking for suggestions on tying these pieces of furniture, rug and wall color together in a semi cohesive way.

I was trying to purposefully redecorate our living room but instead ended up with some impulse buys.

Wondering if repainting the walls would be the best approach.

Any thought appreciated.

Do you have the pieces in your room? Post a picture of the room. Looking at the pieces in this disjointed way doesn't give us a true sense of how they could/could not work together

Yes can work, just change up the pillows on the sofa to pull in the colors from the chair and wall color

This is one end of living room. Entrance/small foyer is off to right hand side. Left hand side has boxes etc trying to rearrange.

The sofa against the wall color looks so jarring to me.

Add cushions to your sofa with colors from your chairs...maybe a great floral. You probably know you need a bigger lamps by sofa (hopefully you have a table on the other side of the sofa that needs a lamp) More artwork but not from the big box stores; look from something more personal.

    The wall color is fine.

We have been considering this lamp for behind the chair near corner.

Lighting by that chair is a great idea but, maybe something simpler.

Floor lamp a good idea, small round table next to chair.

They could work, I would down play that burgundy however, blue throws, yellow and blue and grey pillows and I like the lamp, they mirror your archways, would it go next to the striped chair? Larger table lamps will also help with a similiar linen/burlap type drum shade.

Was thinking of a round table between the two striped chairs.

We do have end tables on each side of sofa so could have matching lamps on each side. The lighting in this room is very poor too. Considering replacing coffee table and end tables also though. These are very old.

    Also need new curtains.

I do have some blue pillows for sofa but they somehow don’t look right. I might try for grey/yellow.

I feel pretty lost even thinking about color and pattern combinations though.

I think painting the walls a creamy white color might help.

I think the wall colour needs to change

This could all work together. I like the rug, sofa, and chairs together. I think the problem is the space looks really tight and the brown tables are adding to the color dilemma.

Once the boxes are cleaned up from the other side of the room, what will you place there? Could you possibly rearrange the furniture in the room a bit so it isn't so tight together? Can you just post a messy pic so we can see the whole space? Promise we won't judge!

I would pull the sofa away from the wall by about 5 inches so the front feet sit on the rug. I'd replace the side tables with something lighter and more airy and forgo a coffee table, or get one that is oval and glass or acrylic so it is see through.

If that all fails or still doesn't seem right, I would lighten the paint. I like Grovelaxe's new lamp to help bring some blue to that side of the room.

    Yes. Light

Bigger lamps and agree with groveraxle change out the rug.

My apologies I am not very familiar with using Houzz in my phone.

The book cases are gone but desk is still there.

    Here are room dimensions.

I’ve tried the sofa in all kinds of different configurations and always end up with it back in the position of the original photo.

Where the striped chairs are in top photo we used to have the TV but I’ve moved the tv to a different room. It is tight there with the chairs, coffee table and sofa, but it also makes for a cozy and agreeable conversation area.

Sofa under the window gives the room the most spacious feel but I do not like sitting with my back to the window. It is the only window in the living room and I need to be able to look outside. Also ends up blocking light.

    Have you considered this arrangement?

I looked through your ideabook and see that all the looks you saved are much lighter and brighter than what you have now. So I changed the rug to a plain ivory jute, added a glass coffee table with legs, and a bright modern still life. Sorry about just dumping the tables in your room, but the odd angle precludes me from actually installing them.

With this look, I might do a yellow lamp instead of a blue one.

Thanks so much for the input.

The room mock ups are so helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to do this.

I have tried the sofa in the middle as posted. For some reason I moved it back against the wall. Fitting in the TV was awkward and it felt, in general like a barrier. I am going to revisit it though because I think it could visually solve a lot of the problems I have with the room.

Funny my idea book is light and airy but I buy a lot of dark wood or even black furniture. We had a black tv console, now moved to family room. Also we have a low black storage unit under the window and a black desk in the living room right now. I’m planning on removing the desk. I would like to add bookshelves and have been looking for some lighter pieces to fit in.

Low bookcases, no taller than the mantel. If they don't fill the wall, snug them up to the fireplace. Lighter rug and lighter coffee table.

I can see how the slimmer coffee tables / end tables help alleviate the kind of weighed down feel.

Ok have some research to go to find a few furniture pieces.

    Much thanks!

Seeing your entire room is really helpful. I'd revisit furniture arrangement before making other purchases. And, I'd consider a rug that compliments instead of just covers up your lovely wood floors.
