Whatever color you decide on for your walls--I would paint your doors the same color (so the blend into the background).

Grey that has a purple undertone would tone down the yellow. I wouldn't do an accent colour on the fireplace. Just paint it the same colour as the other walls. There is so much going on already on that wall. You could paint the built-ins white.

would try a darker sage color on the wall. Paint all your wood trim the same....white.

This color is SW Sheraton Sage. I think it would be a great back drop for your sofa (which I love, by the way).

Do you all think that colors like sage or grey will keep it looking kinda coastal? In the foyer I have SW sea salt and SW Kilim Beige. I like the blue tones, but I do not want my whole house blue.

I have actually seen some couches this color paired with sea salt on this site and it does look good...I just didn't know if having sea salt in the foyer, waterscape in the dining room, then another blue in the living room would be too much blue going on.....our living room wall connects to the kitchen so both rooms would be the same color...also you can see the dining room from the living room and the foyer is around the corner if you take a right at the fire place...

here is the foyer...wall with door is kilim beige and SW sea salt is on the stairway walls.

Yea as much as I love sea salt...I think bringing it into the living room would be too much blue.

Then try a pillow on your sofa which has your blues, the wall color, the white, the sofa color and one more unexpected accent, like this coral/red.

Keep in mind, I am doing this on my monitor. It looks great to me, but test out that sage to make sure I have it right. :>)

I am a big coral fan...I like the pillows. Would the sage also go on the fireplace or would you do a different color.

You could go with either ends if you like black or white for the bookends and the wooden parts of the mantel. Maybe a neutral color in the living room to open up a little more.

I like the green but I think the sea salt will look nice too especially if you paint bookcases and fireplace white also. I would even keep the dining room sea salt to maintain cohesiveness. I think each room should identify with the adjoining rooms. I am anxious to see results.

The dining room is currently SW waterscape...it's a little bit darker than sea salt... In anxious too...I'm just ready to have everything back together. I am going to go to sherwin Williams to get paint samples today. I'm going to get the sage suggested as well as gray.

You want the coastal feel and I see the blues of the sea and the tans of the sand, and the only thing I can't picture the sage green in that image. . . I am seeing grays gray greens without less yellows.

I like Divine Victorie, Date, Hosta, Manzanita, Glass - they sell 8x11 sample sheets of painted color, so your not looking at a 2 inch paper sample, but can place the colors around the room and live with them and be secure with your selection before painting.

I agree now that you say that...I like the sage color....but I feel like it would take away from the coastal vibe and not blend well. I like it with the couch, but I think the room would not flow well with the other colors in the house. I like the some of the devine colors you suggested. We usually use Sherwin Williams though.

Both are excellent paints. I personally prefer Devine. They are a less well know company, but I covered white walls a deep burgundy red in 2 coats. They use more pigment in their paints than any others that I have tried and the durability is excellent. They have fewer colors than SW or most of the other manufacturers, but when I was looking for a taupe, the Devine Capuccino was perfect, where most of the others I tried turned pink or purple on my walls.

The company is founded by an artist who really seems to be able to create colors that work. She personally assisted me when I was trying to find colors that would work with honey maple cabinets (yellow undertone) and a pink undertone light beige tile). I went to two other professionals who both told me to replace the 1200 sq feet of tile or stick with white walls. She immediately suggested colors that worked beautifully.

Since painting my house with her paints I have helped more than a dozen friends and family members pick colors for their homes and they are all thrilled. I read her book and I think about color differently than I ever did before. Whenever I have questions - I just ask Gretchen and she answers with great suggestions. If I get my husband to paint the bookcases white.... Do we just use the same bright white that is on the doors and trim?

I would paint the walls BM touch of gray or whisper violet. I would not use contrast color on the fireplace and stain mantel espresso.

The trim and doors are quite bright, but if you do paint the built=ins white, I think that it will be best to paint them the same bright white. Or... you could paint them the same colour or a shade darker or lighter (depending on what you choose for your walls) as the walls. That will be chic.
Keep the fireplace wall the same colour as the rest of the walls. Decide painting or staining the mantle after you've painted the rest. It might just be perfect as it is.

I agree with carolins on painting the trim and built ins a shade darker than the walls. Bright white might look too traditional for this type of sofa.

Things have been crazy so the project is not underway yet. My husband is on board for painting the bookends white yay! I think we are also going to go with gray walls as many of you suggested as well as stain the mantel espresso( we will do this last to see how everything else looks with the current mantel)

Now onto deciding the a actual paint colors from Sherwin Williams.... Who knew there were so many different whites abd grays!?

Oh bookends... I do not want the wood grain to show through. Do you all think if he sands... Primes and sands again we will be ok ? And would a small roller do best?

Ask your paint supplier how to best go about painting the bookcases I'd say.
