Sliding glass door drapes

I have a sliding glass door in my bedroom that currently has some pretty bad looking, but functional vertical blinds. I am hoping to replace these with drapes, but I have the following issues/ concerns:

I would need the drapes to open to the right side only because I have a mirror on the wall to the left of the door (in theory I could move the mirror but there is not another obvious space in the room).
The door is 8ft wide, so I would need an extra long curtain rod with an extra support in the middle. I think this will prevent me from moving the drapes all the way across the rod?
I've read bad things about extra long curtain rods where the curtains don't slide properly over the join, which could get annoying because we would be opening and closing these every day.
The rule of thumb for drapes is at least 2x the width of the window. Wouldn't that be too much bunched up fabric on one side when the drapes are open (which is always during the day).

Some other notes;

This bedroom faces north so it never gets direct sun.
We need something covering the door for privacy and to keep the room dark in the early morning though.

I'm open to suggestions about how to make the drapes work or another idea that might look better than the vertical blinds.

If you use a traverse rod, the length and supports are not an issue. That would mean either pinch pleated or ripplefold drapes. Your rod would need to be 10-11 ft feet long to allow the drapes to stack off the window.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but I really like the look of shutters on sliding glass doors. It can get expensive, but it could be a good option.

I had a huge glass door in my old living room this is what I did to get rid of vertical blinds. At night closed the curtains. Opened on the right to open the door the go to the back patio.

you could always put a bracket in the middle to hold the rod. but, there are other alternatives,,,,

How can you sleep in a room with vertical blinds? Ha! Sorry, just kidding. You should rethink your idea of opening your drapes from one side. Having drapes stacked to one side when the drapes are open looks weird & unbalanced. Plus if you go with less than 2X the fullness because you're afraid there will be too much stack-back on the one side, the drapes will look skimpy when they are drawn. So your drapes will look weird open, and look weird closed. I don't think you will be happy with the result. You should either relocate the mirror and install centre drawn drapes or go with blinds or shutters.

You could try the middle bracket off center closer to the non-opening end. You could put some panels on either side. When you want them open, you could leave them blocking the far end a bit. Or have a curtain holder and swag them a bit. Depends on your needs and style. Good luck!
