It will be hard to get postive feed back on carpet here IMO. With an old dog I would never do carpet the chances of accidents is too high why not just do the same floors you have on the main level and add area rugs if you want some carpet.

Kind of too late for that, maybe we should have? Did the hardwoods already on the main floor and the stairs and new spindles are already complete. We'd have to pull everything up to have the stairs redone to add full hardwood treads (have the half-hardwood and half basic woods on the stairs that the builders did.) So now it's carpet replacement time. I'm tired and can only find the negative stuff so I guess I do my homework and go with my gut and close the doors to the upstairs bedrooms when the dog gets older! Thanks!

Hi Denise, I love carpet in all its warmth and softness--etc. etc. My understanding is that the Triexta carpet is a polyester blend. Polyester has been used increasingly in carpet for its softness/plushness. Historically, however, polyester and poly blends have not held up nearly as well as Nylon. I'm not sure whether that has changed more recently--but it is a question worth asking. Will the Triexta hold up as well as your previous Nylon? Hopefully someone in the know will chime in for you. Make sure you invest in the best carpet pad--they are available with a waterproof layer that will prevent pet stains from soaking into the pad or the sub-floor--that may help with your older dog. Thanks for the comments. One carpet place that I looked at is HUGE on the Triexta -- it's a cousin of polyester but it's kind of it's own animal, the stain protection is built into the fibers vs. applied separately. I still think the nylon is slightly softer, at least some of the ones I'm looking at. I have a friend that installed the Triexta Homefront II and will be visiting her to see a large area in person, but my heart for whatever reason is still stuck on the nylon, call me old school! We'll see, have to make a decision and move on, lots of company for Thanksgiving and this WILL be done by then!

@Denise Tokarz Interested to hear what brand you decided on. I'm in the same boat you were where each brand has tons of negative reviews so its beyond frustrating and confusing. But looking for nylon too.

Denise Tokarz, I, too am interested to hear what you ultimately decided, and I appreciate your question. I feel like every time I have "figured out" what type of carpet fiber to choose a style from, I find a whole new slew of not just negative--but frightening--reviews. Currently, I THINK I am going to go with nylon, and prob the Life Happens collection from Shaw, since we have a puppy. Previously, I was nearly sold on the Triexta. It is so tempting. I've got to give Mohawk props on their marketing of that product! That said, I read in another forum that Mohawk pays retailers a significantly higher profit margin than other manufacturers, so they tend to push that brand. I know you can't believe everything you read, but as I recall it came from a flooring business owner, and I found it interesting. I wish I could remember the forum where I read that. If I can find it again, I'll come back here and reference it.

Denise, you are correct that Triexta is its own animal. It is different from polyester. Dupont has a patent on it, and licenses it to Mohawk for carpet. It is hydrophobic, so the fiber itself is stain resistant and won't absorb any moisture. It is also as resilient as nylon. A friend of mine has had it in her house in a high traffic area for 12 years and it looks as new as when it was first installed. Several of my sales colleagues have it in their home and are very pleased with it. Having said that, Nylon is also an excellent choice. Nylon 6,6 is the best nylon choice in terms of resiliency and stain resistance, and typically is warrantied again the 3 pet P's: pee, puke, and poop.

As someone who sells carpet, the margin on a carpet is determined via negotiations, and differs from organization to organization. I don't believe you can make a blanket statement that Mohawk gives retailers a higher margin than other carpet manufacturers. The way to incentivize salespeople is through spiffs, and Mohawk doesn't shine in that area.

I just signed a contract for Triexta for the bedrooms. The salesman is very high on it. Two years ago, the same small family business installed Karastan LVP everywhere but the bedrooms. The installers took some shortcuts on leveling. The owner came out, said the job wasn’t acceptable, and had the entire floor ripped out and replaced. They honor their lifetime customer satisfaction warranty. The salesman told me they just ripped out a $ 30,000 Triexta carpet after they couldn’t get out a stain. So the carpet may stain permanently. It must unusual though.

@pstein15 How is your Triexta carpet now? Stains or resilient to wear or being compressed? I have been looking for months and reading all the negative reviews for every carpet, but need to make a decision and go ahead with the project. Thanks for any information you can give.
