Need help finding a rustic wooden media console for TV Alcove

last modified: 6 years ago

Good afternoon all decorators. I am in search of some designer recommendations for a media console/sideboard in our TV Room and would appreciate your expertise on sourcing this piece.

Our goal is *not* to have the equipment visible. The current stand we have (picture #1 of TV room), is an old Scandi / Danish stand from the old house which we are trying to replace. The look we want is more of a rustic, salvaged wood feel. The accessories on the fireplace for reference are a combo of Room & Board, St. Frank (artwork), Sundance Catalog, Reclaimed Wood Sugar Mold, and RH.

Our Spanish Colonial / Santa Barbara style house has an elevated stage w/an alcove so our challenge lies here as everything is lifted off the ground. The alcove is 60" wide and we would prefer to fill as much of the space as possible width wise.

For proof of concept, we photoshopped in 2 RH Sideboards that we liked when visiting their showroom. The first is their "Monterey Panel Triple-Door Sideboard" and the 2nd one is their "Geometric Triple-Door Sideboard"

Links:

Geometric

My concern with both of these are that they are large pieces of furniture in terms of the *Height*. Our existing Danish Stand is only 18 1/2" Tall.

Monterey

Overall: 54"W x 17¾"D x 29½"H

Geometric

Overall: 60¾"W x 18"D x 34½"

So my question for all decorators who can kindly assist with this is

1. Do you think the existing RH pieces are too high/overpowering for the space

2. Can you offer any other suggestions for low profile, rustic media consoles that could work in the space.

Any help and links to the products would be appreciated.

Select one that hangs off the wall and is minimal as to not compete with your fireplace design.

I fail to see/feel the rustic part of your decor scheme, and the TV is way too wide for a console, which should be 25% wider than the set itself. With the door to the right and the raised area, I can't understand how you can properly arrange seating to enjoy the FP/TV. If it were my home, at the least, I would drywall that nook closed and wall mount the TV at a proper height for viewing. You might have a custom storage area built in below it to hold the equipment. However, I still find the location of this entertainment stage to be awkward, and maybe impossible to deal with satisfactorily since it puts the traffic path right in front of the focal items and raises the media too high.

Can the art be turned? Looking at it I feel it should go the same was as the fire box and no higher than the TV alcove

I think Decor's idea is perfect. close in the nook and have the wall flush all the way around.

In doing this option, you could also have the space wired for all of the electronics and/or maybe a little recessed nook that would hold a sound bar.

another option-have a local carpenter build to fit:

maybe look for a vintage credenza (they are usually smaller at 60")

Printers console may also work. A carpenter could make one like this for you to the exact measurements.

I'd paint the inside of the nook a darker color so that it recedes.

Because of the width of the TV, you are right to look for a console that fills the space. I like both of the ones that you Photoshopped size wise, but I think the simpler one is a better look on this busy wall.

I like your mantel styling and the art is turned the right way. I would probably remove everything you have currently sitting on the hearth.

or, maybe something like this. (since you like the reclaimed wood, you could line the inside of the nook with it)

then just have a wall to wall (inside of the nook) console made to fit. similar to this.

agree,,,remove all the knick-knacks from the mantle area

Thank you everyone. Yes, we can hire a contractor to build this out but wanted to start with a furniture option. Regarding the height of the TV, there is a grey sectional directly across and my husband positioned the TV on an arm at the correct height for viewing. I can understand how it might appear to be at the wrong height.

Regarding the floating option, how deep do these go? Our alcove is pretty deep, and wondering if it would look ok floating under the tv that is not on a flat wall.

That's an excellent idea Beth. Thank you.

Beth, the printers console is 54¾"W x 17¾"D x 27½"H. Is 27 1/2" too High for the space? In my first picture, you can see the danish stand that is there now. It's 18 1/2".

most newer items will be taller. that's why I said if you had a local carpenter make one ( I've made my own printers console) you can have it done to your exact measurements

groveraxle, this looks great! It's amazing how just by removing that stuff and adding greenery you get a whole different look. Do you think that the console is too large for the alcove or do we need something shorter?

I would keep it simple. I wouldn't go paneling or even painting that niche. Keep the media cabinet simple, too. You have plenty of interest on that wall. Don't overload it.

The consoles as you've Photoshopped them are the perfect size. You don't want much space between the console and the TV.

Take a look at this one from RH in shagreen. Don't know if it comes in the right size, though.

the 4 door console is 80" , the one pictured above is 100"

I think you can get this one at 64" but it's 28" high:

    https://www.rhmodern.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod9190134

Or, this one is 60", and 24" tall. would that still be too high?

    I love this look,

and they do have it in a 60" (they have it in a weathered gray, and a black oak)

as for the reclaimed wood, I wouldn't advise that if she was also doing a wood console. She mentioned she liked the rustic look, so I put out that option if she went w/an all white console.

I still like the idea of painting the inside back wall of the nook a darker color. I don't think it's too busy looking. I also think the darker inside color is a better backdrop for the tv and viewing.

I like this version. try painting the inside wall a darker tone. (doesn't have to be black) I don't know what other colors are in the room.

groveraxle, I was more concerned personally about actual size of the sideboard in terms of how large it is on its own, and then we are moving it up into an alcove... Maybe I'm making myself paranoid about this, but the piece is 54"W x 17¾"D x 29½"H.

Good point about the distance between the screen and console. We can always move the TV screen up as it's on an arm.

Here is a pic of the 4 panel sideboard. This one is much wider than the 3 panel we photoshopped in, however the height is the same - 29 1/2".

hmmm,,,depending on the rest of the room and colors, I kind of like it. Now, if all of her walls are white, surrounded by more white, then probably not. But I do like just the one wall painted. I think it's better for tv viewing. If that's an Urbane Bronze color, I might like that w/the tile floor.

Soleil, I don't think you told us the actual width of the space. I would go with a console that totally fills the space side to side and is proportionally about as tall as your Photoshopped rendering. If you can't find one that size, I'd have one built. The one in the rendering above is a perfect size, whatever that size is.

Ok, you guys have magic software.... This is all excellent advise and Proof of concepts.

I am mentally stepping back 6 feet and looking at this... Do you think the dark alcove shrinks the room or enhances the TV experience? I am not an AV expert so need so help.

Beth - I like the simplicity of the last pic you sent. That one is also shorter.

Regarding width, 60" is the MAX we can go as the alcove is just a hair over 60".

What color wood would you recommend? Here is a picture of the opposite side of the room from the TV starring my husband the runner who just had foot surgery, and my little dog Sophie. Try not to laugh too hard.

Hey Beth. Our entire house is painted a warm, creamy Spanish White. Baseboard, doors and ceilings. Just wanted to put that out there....

lol. i'm sure your husband thanks you for that shot. and please tell him to give your Boston a bite!

the room is very pretty btw.

I don't think painting that back inner wall a dark color would hurt. say, something along the color lines of your sofa.

Besides, it's only paint. if you hate it, just repaint it

I don't care for the niche painted and feel it detracts from the lovely lightness that I always associate with Santa Barbara style. This looks to be a fabulous house. Any chance you'd share more photos with us?
