Replace ALL the tile. It's a bit dated anyway. : ) You don't need a "picture" over the cook.

Remove and replace all the backsplash and no accent behind the stove at all.

If you do not want to go the expense and trouble of replacing the entire backsplash, remove the backsplash that is just behind the range, and replace it with a stainless steel panel for the 30" width behind the range, going up to the bottom of the hood. These panels are inexpensive, and give a "pro" look. That is the easy, most painless solution to your problem.

Or, keeping the tile (I won't address datedness), have a custom manufacturer such as ModernAire build a wall hood with a flat top equaling the cabinet depth, and a sloped front to the point where front pan cooking plumes will be captured. Something like this in sectional shape (borrowed from the Wolf Design Guide):

There may be existing hoods with the appropriate configuration.

Please use the information on this forum to determine blower rated power needed and commensurate duct sizing.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, we originally thought of doing a full remodel, but then decided against it. So we’re living with the dated tile and the cabinets, countertops, etc.

You have to remove the "picture" to get a stainless panel behind the cook. By the time you dream up a hundred ways to have it look home Joe in result ( no law says this will come out without damage to neighboring tile ) ? Delay, save some money until you can replace the splash. Even if it means living with repaired drywall, and a painted wall : ) for a bit.

carefully cut it out and replace a SS sheet as mentioned. (or if you have more matching tile, just do that)

Or, can you match your granite? have a piece cut to fit and use that.

yes, the entire backsplash could go, it's not that big of a job to do.

I happened upon this post and I have to ask the pros - what is it that makes the backsplash tile so "dated"- is it just that everyone's doing subway tile now? Is it the accent strip? Is it the color? It's making me think that no matter what we do to our homes, it doesn't matter, it's "dated" in 5 years. I recently sold my home in which I had a kitchen redone in 2012, one bathroom redone in 2014 and the most recent in 2017, but the Realtor kept saying "dated" this and "dated" that. I guess I have terrible "dated" taste! It still sold in a day.

the square tiles with wide grout and picture frame over the stove is an older design. If selling might be worth changing- if not only change if you want to

It's only "dated" because someone decided that it was and has kept saying it to people who ask.

Who that "someone" is I don't know. Guess the same "someone" who decides on the color of the year.

It's all subjective.

@Marta I had it made at a metal fabricator using my design and dimensions. It was about $100 and I used construction adhesive to glue it to the wall and tiny nails from inside the cabinet to inside the rolled edge to keep the shelf firm.

Love this - I'm looking to replace OTR non-vented microwave with a hood...would also like to run the metal on the sides of the exposed white cabinets! I wonder how that would look.

This is a great idea. I really like my backsplash but hate the over the range microwave.
