Mortar wash wash out!

I wanted to add a little bit of the mortar wash affect to my new Nob Hill brick fireplace. I
thought we nailed it, only to return a few hours later and it looked like an all over paint wash. Some bricks were totally covered.
It was too dry to wash any off, tried vinegar, we ended up using a wire brush drill bit for some results.
What did we do wrong? We need to try to remove some more tomorrow. I’d like to tweak it like we had it but very fearful to mess up what we have!

brick is porous. it soaked up the grout. You should have applied a sealer first. it's not going to come out.

should have used Romabio.

what look do you want? I like the look of the bricks on the hearth. do it all like that

what directions? is it supposed to be a lime wash? normally people want the overall white effect. there are better products than using grout. grout is made of cement so, it's not going to wash off like a paint product.

that's why I mentioned Romabio. it's a natural product meant for masonry. And, it can be washed off within the first 72 hours.

Not that my opinion matters, but I agree with Beth on liking the look of the brick on the hearth!

It's not what you want ..but , it looks nice ...so live with it , laugh and watch it fade with time !
