Round be rectangular dinning table

last modified: 6 years ago

my dinning area is super small. From the kitchen counter to the window wall there are 106“ and from the back wall ( wall with painting ) to the other end ( where the mirror wall ends ) there are 138” . When there are people sitting down it is a tight squeeze to get to the kitchen so that being said... I wonder if I’ll be better of with a round table ?

please advice !

A rectangular table with a pedestal will provide more seating capacity. How many people are usually sitting down to dinner there? If you are only 2-4, you can use a square table with a leaf that opens when company comes.

The issue is not how many people fit in the table. The issue is when chairs are open there is very little space to walk to the kitchen. I had a small square table before this one = same issue

I think the table size is okay, and a round table wouldn't give you much more space. The seating is the issue to me. Those chairs are too big for the space and you need more room to get in and out of the bench, which would put it in the way of the stools.

This table has a little drop leaf at the end which makes room for the big chair's occupant not to bang their knees. You need table top space at the ends. I would move the bench to the other side, add two regular dining chairs on the traffic path side and put the upholstered ones at the end of a new table. Pull-out dining chairs are easier to move when traffic needs to get by than the bench is.

How wide is the table? If it’s larger than 38” wide I’d find one no wider than 38. Also if you remove the bar over hang and chairs it seems like you’d have plenty of room.

We use the bar stools everyday !

I have a relatively small dining area. After considering options I opted for a so-called racetrack shape. This enables me to seat six very comfortably if need be and I could probably seat eight in a pinch.

Because it is a racetrack shape it doesn't have the width that a round table would have and because it is a pedestal instead of having legs at each end, people can sit comfortable at any edge of the table.

I only opted for four dining chairs but I have some nice folding chairs stacked in my hall closet in the event I want to seat more than four at a meal.

Here is a picture of my table - because of the angle of the shot, it looks much more squished against the wall but the table is actual equip-distant. Because of the need to have a walk way into the kitchen from the living room, the width of the table was actually more important than the length and a 48" round table would have been too wide.

The arrangement you have works better than a round table would IMO.

Would it be better if the bench was on the other side of the table next to the wall? Or maybe put two benches around your table. When not eating they can be pushed under the table more.

If this were my space I would select a narrow counter height table that is 24" wide. I would get matching stools for the counter and the table.

If I had the money I would do a custom live edge or live edge resin filled table top - Something that is a design statement.

You could keep 4 chairs at the table and 2 at the counter, when you have guests all 6 chairs could go around the table and food would be served from the counter rather than crowding the table.

I would select stools that are comfortable but not overwhelming to the space

I like the size and shape of these:

Your room is very nice. I think the rectangle works best, but what about looking for one a bit narrower and as long as you have room for. That's going to require a longer rug and I'd get some smaller scale but comfy chairs - make sure the legs are fairly straight up and down and don't splay out much. Can't tell if your bar stool legs splay much, but if they do, you could someday look for some that are straighter. Hopefully, the bench is just for children. I'd also be sure there was room for chairs at the ends.

    Decoenthusiast's suggestions seem perfect.

A pedestal table smaller chairs and no bench an oval works well in small spaces swivel barstools that slide under the counter , no rug that one is way too small anyway.
