new tv- is it too large for my space? help!

My husband just bought a huge new tv on Black Friday and mounted it to the wall in our living room.

We were both really excited about the “cinema” type feel but now that I see it with my old tv stand the room seems a little unbalanced. The tv stand and the tv are the exact same length but I think the height makes it look monstrous versus the stand. Is this tv too big for my space?

Any tips on how to balance it out? I feel like it looks ridiculous.

Well I will be of no help to you because I love big tv’s....it might just take a few days to get use to the new look

It's a tad big for that tv stand, but it doesn't look bad. You'll get used to it...maybe.

Just make sure you are the correct distance away from the screen.

I think it always looks better to have the tv stand a bit bigger than the TV.

I think a lower and a bit wider for the TV stand maybe for your BD ,Ikea does really nice lower TV stands that put the TV at the proper viewing height it’s called Besta and because the TV shelves are quite shallow one could fit there for sure . The middle of the screen should be at eye level when your are seated.

Since the tv doesn't actually sit on the stand I'm not sure what the relationship should be between them although, in general, like others here have said - the stand being a bit wider than the tv usually looks more proportional. If you have the money to do it would you consider having a custom built-in that matches the height of the adjacent door? It could have doors that cover the tv when not in use. Good luck!

I think it's fine, and am sure you'll get much enjoyment out of the larger screen. We have the same issue with our tv, which is over our fireplace. It's almost exactly the width of the mantel so takes up a lot of space, but it's there for the watching, and we enjoy it immensely. Hope you'll enjoy yours as well.

Jinx, we threw you a parade. Well done!

    LOL! Thank you! :D

Too large? No such thing. Looks fine.

I think it looks fine. The media console fills the space nicely and a wider one would be too big there. Enjoy your new TV!

It looks fine, you could eventually get a wider TV stand but not necessary, what is the size of the TV?

The TV is not too big for the wall. It would get rid of the console table all together and put a bi fold picture in front the of the TV. Close it off when it is not in use.

Although it would look more in proportion with a larger console, you really don’t have the room for anything much bigger. I think, though, that the white color of the console is bugging me....I’d rather see a color (if that fits your style) or some darker wood color.

I think, when the console is close to the same size as the tv, it looks better to have them placed on the console instead of wall-hung (or hung closer to the console). It looks more like one unit that way. I know nothing about TV's and if all can be hung or on a stand, but I'd try it and see if you like it better. These aren't particularly attractive examples but I think they show what I mean.

If you don't want to take down the tv to see how it might look, I'd just put some things under the console legs to raise it up (just temporarily for the visual) and see how it looks without so much of the wall showing between the pieces.

I think you will get used to it. I know the tv is a tad longer than the console, but what caught my eye and it may be from staring at your pic, but the tv in general looks larger than that cabinet. Not sure if it translates in real life though.

Yes, the TV stand is too small. Get one that covers the entire wall, and remove the greenery on top.

And lower the TV so it's 5 - 8" above the console.

A basic "rule" that can be helpful is: wall 25% wider than stand/credenza, stand/credenza 25% wider than TV. That usually gives a pretty balanced look. If you really want to improve balance, you could just do a door frame to wall built-in. Then it would at least look purposeful rather than like a purchasing/measuring mistake.

It looks fine to me. I think it would look better with a slightly wider TV stand, but I don't think it's totally necessary. (Disclaimer: I have an antique chest that I love under my TV and my husband insisted on a huge TV so mine has similar proportions.)

just needs a glass of wine in your hand and hallmark Xmas movie on that screen. Enjoy!

Add add a -door-frame-to-wall counter top (wood?) to the top of your console and it will be more proportionate without a huge $$. Or be happy with a huge and fab TV! Not worth stressing over.

Looks okay to me as is ... but it would look even better with a wider top to that cabinet and with the tv lower and w/o anything between the top and tv.

You can keep the cabinet you have and still attain the wider look. Cabinet is too nice to just abandon it.

IF you agree with those that suggest you need a slightly wider TV stand, simply add a top to it as deep and wide and in any material and finish you choose. [Think fireplace mantel or wide stair step or wide thresh hold board or countertop.]

I would paint the console deep rich charcoal to give it a heavier appearance..that should do the trick!

    It will look more balanced.

Unless you're planning to move the tv to a wider wall space, swapping the cabinet for a larger one would seriously crowd the space, whereas just adding a wider (white or black top) wouldn't.

Much prefer the white cabinet to black with the wall color and white doors and trim on both sides.
