Very interesting article. Isn't nature just amazing. At first I thought a wasp enticing a tree to make galls to protect and feed a embryo was fascinating, until I read about the honey dew. It not only entices the plant to make the gall, but to make a gall that expels honey dew to attract protectors, bee, hornets and other wasp, to protect it's embryo. That is fascinating.

Oaks, as the most common wild trees in the east US, are subject to a whole array of pests (insects, fungal, etc), but few of them are seriously destructive. Gypsy moths are an introduced pest that were very destructive to them, but they've been hammered by a purposely introduced fungal disease that turns the caterpillars to mush.

Not sure on the species of oak - possibly swamp white(?) Photos of the leaves in summer would help.
