Starting a big project

I am about to embark on a big project. We have a nice parcel in the Santa Cruz mountains of California on which we are going to build a house (or several connected structures).

I have always been impressed with the quality of feedback from the Houzz community. Similarly, I would like a place to track progress on the project. Finally, I have enjoyed living vicariously through others as they go through their project that I would like to return the favor.

Questions:

Are there any features of areas of Houzz that are designed for such a purpose (track a project over time?). My land falls under the jurisdiction of the California Coastal Commission and permitting could be as long as two years from the time designs are roughly complete.

Would I be better off with my own website (using something like word press)?

For managing the project you could try BuilderTrend but personally I think it's more trouble than it's worth.

For documenting/sharing I'd do your own blog + instagram.

Post monthly on the building a home updates. I would like to follow your build! What an amazing spot.................Make your own blog, and post a link, as well as posting and getting feedback here (if you can take some of the mean comments). :)

Take lots of pictures. Build an album to visually track your project. Try to take photos that might also work for “after” shots on same angles. Then create Ideabooks here and on Pinterest. Build a spreadsheet to track activities and specific choices. Print and put in 3 ring binder. Organize binder by room or space. Keep copies of all emails especially ones that document main decisions. I find printing out ideas etc creates a great package of documentation you will keep referring too!

Current version of an organized binder or file cabinet is a cloud drive (google, one drive, drop box). Organize it similar to your cost breakdown or draw schedule.

I am backing everything related to our build to One Drive, so I have access from my PC, tablet and phone. This way I'll never leave an important document at home. Just need to think ahead and create the appropriate folders/categories for tracking everything.
