would an accent paint color be overkill for this entryway?

We’re going to be repainting our entryway soon (after wallpaper removal of course). A contractor is coming tomorrow to start painting the living room which is next to the entryway and he’ll be painting one wall of the entryway also after drywalling over the pass throughs, so I need to choose a paint color. Here are pics of the entryway, hallway, and living room.

The living room walls will be ivory due to the blue carpet in that room. The hallway leading away from the entryway will also be ivory after wallpaper removal, due to travertine tile. I would really like to have some color on the walls somewhere, and not just have the color come from flooring colors that I can’t change. Could I get away with doing an accent color for the entryway? The closet will hopefully be completely redone soon, with the center strip removed and a built-in bench with a stained top added along with beadboard behind the bench and new coat hooks and shelf. I could paint the entryway a color and leave the closet ivory, or paint the back wall of the closet an accent color and leave the entryway ivory. I’d like to use soft navy for an accent color but it might be too dark of a color with the dark floor and door. Door color is staying. Rug/mat will be replaced with something brighter. Aqua would be my second color choice for an accent wall color. If it matters, navy is currently an accent color in the living room and teal will be an accent color in the dining room which is straight down the hallway from the entryway.

what color is the floor in the entryway? black? dark grey? blues? mixed? I would go with a lighter color so it does not look like a dark hole - maybe a lighter soft blue for all 3 walls (including inside the closet then switch out the light fixture for something bigger to throw off more light - semi flush to ceiling rather than flush unless the top of door hits it and then use art to give it more vibrancy, color, etc.. if you do leave it ivory i would used framed art, family photos in nice matching frames along the walls and again change out that light fixture for something else

With the woods, and the confined space entry, I would stick to light colors and then amp up the art on the walls to bring in color. The wall above the stairs would be a good place to put a really large piece of colorful art. Keep everything else quiet. Too many colors make spaces look cluttered. You have wood tones, carpet color, flooring color, two tones on stair railing and balusters, etc. Reduce things to more simple look and you will feel better about the space. Remove the outdoor play thing from the living room. Find somewhere else for that.

IMO forget the accent walls they need to have a reason for being there not just plunked into a space so many things decide if an accent wall is even needed to me they are usually a dated look . As for the hall I have no idea where an accent wall would be good at all. I sure hope the doors on the closet are just removed for painting. Why is there a slide in your LR?

Paint the entry ivory as you planned, but no accent wall. Instead paint your interior door(and exterior if it works) the blue you want in a satin finish and paint the wood railing the same blue in a semi-gloss finish.

No accent wall - use your rug change to brighten the space and add interest. There are plenty of stylish indoor/outdoor rugs.

I second painting the interior door! Obviously we did a lot of painting all over but painting the inside of the door black to match the outside made a huge difference on its own.

I think the suggestion of ivory walls and painting the door (and for sure I love blue) would be lovely.

Agree about painting the door. I painted my front door a deep red inside and out and it really makes the front foyer.

If I paint the door should the trim be painted to match the walls? Would it look odd to have white/ivory trim in the entryway and walnut in the living and dining rooms? That walnut colored trim is throughout the main level and isn’t changing because my husband likes it and because the window frames are the same color.

Could I do navy for the front door? The floor stones are a mix of black, dark gray, and dark brown.

We definitely need more light in that entryway. I’ll see if I can talk Dh into a different light fixture.

How do you edit a picture to put an item you’re considering in the room? Is there an app for that?

My opinion: go for the navy blue door. Since you aren't painting the rest of the trim, leave the door trim its current walnut wood color.
