Would you ever consider...

installing a wall mounted dispenser in lieu of creating a wall niche in the shower wall to hold body wash, shampoo and conditioner? (From a quick search, there are some decent looking ones available.)

No. What do you do when it breaks?

Reminds me of the YMCA. But if there are some attractive ones on the market, it might be a decent choice. In either case, niche or dispenser, I prefer that it is not in view from general bath area, just from when you are in the shower.

No. In our first home, hubs installed one in our shower (w/out asking.) I hated it.

No, would remind me of the gym and I wouldn't want to mess with refilling the dispenser.

There are other options if you don’t want a niche. You can do a ledge, corner shelves, a little teak shower bench, a basket sitting on a shower bench, etc.

Never. Niches are easy to clean and you can just put things away between uses if you don't like clutter in your shower.

I like niches. But was trying to tell you what some of the other options are. Why do you not want a niche? Or ledge, or shelf, or teak corner bench? What is it about a dispenser that makes you want that?

We have one. It came with the house. It is a gold Frontgate model that is probably dated but still looks good in our master bathroom. Come to think of it, the guest bath also has one, but in white.

HU, I don't necessarily want a dispenser; just considering all options. I decant my products into containers anyway, so refilling a dispenser wouldn't be an issue for me. In searching pretty containers, wall dispensers also came up which got me thinking about them.

    jojoco, do you like them?

No because I prefer bar soap.

Jojoco brings up something that should be considered. If the dispenser becomes really dated (or breaks) what to do? I wouldn’t put a dispenser. I like niches. But if I hated niches, I’d install a ledge or shelf, or do like we did in one shower: a teeny tiny teak corner bench that you could sit on (in theory) but is really only meant to put things on.

    OMG, bar soap. No.

If I were to do dispensers, I'd do three of something along these lines:

    https://www.houzz.com/product/116654872-smedbo-house-scandinavian-design-polished-brass-soap-pump-and-holder-contemporary-soap-and-lotion-dispensers#productReviews

But, realistically, will probably do a niche. ;)

Hubby and I use different products. We'd need a wall of dispensers :(

No, I'm a bar soap kinda gal. And my husband and I use different shampoos, and I don't like the gym vibe.

    No!

Shelf, ledge, niche, even a towel rod to prop bottle(s) on would be better, IMHO.

We put one in my son's shower. It is easy to refill and useful for him. You can't see it since the shower curtain is closed. It works well for him.

I wouldn't but I can see the appeal. If you decanter anyway, (I don't,) you can probably put a really large amount in and not worry about for a great while.

Maybe a vending machine in the shower that distributes bar soap??

I'm not sure the wall-mounted dispensers have any advantage over a niche. And I, too, would worry they'd break and replacing would be a hassle.

I like the occasional bar soap! Trader Joes always has a nice selection. I grew up using a very neutral gentle bar soap (Ivory, I think) and I like that you can always find bar soap that uses very few ingredients.

    Whatsayyou,

As you can tell from the photo, we also have ledges. I use the ledges and my DH uses the dispenser. I’m also a bar soap kind of gal. The dispenser in the other bathroom is filled, but I think the kids use bottled shampoo as the ledges are used there as well.

I probably wouldn’t choose one, but I’m OK with it being there.

I use bar soap so really like our bar soap niche that have spots for 2 bars - we also have a corner shelf for shampoo etc. in our current house. When products change or I feel a need to change products since my hair isn't the same as it used to be as time goes on I don't want to mix them so what a pain to clean the dispenser and then change it out. I also use different products than DH including a different bar soap. Sometimes I also use other things such as a specific facial cleanser, but not on a daily basis as I have sensitive skin and a niche or shelf comes in handy for that stuff.

If you buy in bulk and want pretty containers maybe use the soap style pump containers and put them nicely in a niche to have it look nice and the similarity of a dispenser, but not the pain of having it break or wanting to replace product with something else and not needing at least 5 different wall mounted ones because you and your significant other wants different "stuff".

    I hadn't considered a ledge, Annette. Hmmm.....

How do you tell if you're near the end of a product?

For fellow soap people - I don't use soap on my body but I do use Ivory bar soap on my face. It's the only thing I have found that doesn't irritate my eyes.

    last modified: 6 years ago

No - bought a house once that had one and I couldn't wait to remove it. I'm another bar soap user - for body only. DH uses some kind of liquid man-soap.

I wouldn't mind one (assuming it wasn't a permanent mount with holes in the tile) at all but I'd still want a niche/soap dish/ledge for the other things, including bar soap.

As a retrofit, dispensers can be a good idea if you don't have enough shelf space, niches, or whatever.

But I wouldn't plan on it for a shower that isn't built yet.

And for all of the people that ask "What if it breaks?":

Most are just stuck to the wall with adhesive. It might take a little effort, but you can remove it without damaging anything.

I love my niche. Easy to clean and everything I need fits. When I stopped using bar soap in the shower, I stopped having to clean residual soap scum. My shower loves EO shower gel.

Even with the dispenser, I still like a surface for when I need to use a special shampoo, soap, or body wash for some reason, and for a razor and shaving cream. Anyway, DH likes to use glycerine soap, I like body wash. I also keep a squeegee in the shower, in the basket with my shampoos and body wash, and an old toothbrush for when I see something that needs a quickie clean.

No dispenser. I prefer a niche and everything, even tall bottles, fit in ours. Those long ledges are really nice. We have a lot of separate products so there would be a long lineup. No bar soap here either although hubby prefers it sometimes.

    I like ledges, too.

I like them deep enough that I can place an IKEA Variera box, that my husband drilled holes in the bottom of, to tidily keep a large Dr. Bronner's, Every Man Jack, Naturoli Shampoo, and 2 razors. Ledges are also handy for keeping an extra hand towel, to wipe down the shower and fixtures (we have hard water). I also use them for shaving.

I could probably use a niche for shaving, too, lol, but I might not be as graceful....

No, if it breaks or something it would be an issue. Personally I also hate having to pour my products into another dispenser. It’s just another thing. If you don’t mind that and you don’t want to see product bottles, I’d just buy nice dispensers. Then you can also change those along with other accents if you want a fresh look without remodeling

The thing I like about my shower length ledge is that we can separate our products. Mine at one end, his at the other. I also have a nice little wooden thing for holding the bar soap on the ledge, makes cleanup a bit easier. I also have a little cup with drainage holes for razors.

Were we to do a ledge, one end would butt up against a tiled wall but the other a glass wall. There will be 8" between the outside of glass wall and base cabinet end. I'm having difficulty picturing this; is it doable? Or would a freestanding ledge make more sense in this case?

Nope. Just one more thing that's a pain in the petunias if it breaks. Or if it doesn't break, it eventually becomes a once-trendy-now-dated object of disdain.

Were we to do a ledge, one end would butt up against a tiled wall but the other a glass wall.

This is how my ledge is. Or "pony wall" or whatever it's called. Functionally, it's a ledge. :-D The long side of mine backs to glass, as does one short side. The other short side backs to tile. My ledge is a small slab of granite that matches the vanity top.

We have a dispenser - it looks like one system but has 4 compartments.

Looks much cleaner than a cluttered shelf of different shapes and colors.

Oh and we do have a shelf that was originally tiled for theses items but it

looked silly with all the clutter - plus it was difficult to clean as you had all that soapy water residue hanging around the bottles

    No

    Same reasons as others gave

-we use very different products. And yes I like soap bars..))

-I'd hate to refill it all the time. Ok I won't do it, my DH would. Still. Lol.

-doesn't fit my house's style. (or me. ) In some very contemporary space I might cave, and only if it's already there..and I'd be sad..
