Four big pieces, do you own anything like this that you love? If you need a lamp on it I'd eventually get a taller one. See how the bottom shelves are bigger than the top ones, take that into account when you add items.

Also does it look good turned facing the front door. Now you mostly see the side panel, but I don't know your layout.

It looks quite jammed into that small area with no "frame" around it. I like 25% more wall than furniture as a frame. A taller lamp and big items inside; do you collect anything large scale?

Is that an HVAC return I see behind the cabinet? If so, you need to move the cabinet.

The space is too small for that cabinet. I would replace it with a small round table.

No, it really doesn't work there, especially with the return air vent. How about a ficus in that corner? You could get a floor light to shine up through it and cast interesting shadows on the ceiling and walls.

I agree that it is too large for that spot. Since you're asking what to use it for, then you don't really need it there. Perhaps there is a spot in the kitchen or dining area? I can see using it for cookbooks or interesting looking serving pieces.

To add, I note the toys so perhaps a glass front piece of furniture isn't a good idea in a house with small children. Maybe move it to the master bedroom?

It’s a non functioning return. We enjoy the piece there so I’m just looking for some suggestions of what to put in it for decoration. I have small but well behaved girls that don’t go near it.

Do you need the lamp there? I’d provably at a plant and maybe a art behind.

I would use this cabinet as a small book case, filled with some books and a couple of larger objects. Also the top is too narrow for a larger lamp, I would replace the lamp with a tall narrow piece of art, that would not interfere with your controls on the wall. then just add a bowl on the top, as you have or a plant.

I believe she's intent on using the piece there, despite the good advice about it not fitting well. In that light, I would add a few large pottery pieces or baskets; maybe some books. I would also try angling it in that space, as it does look awfully cramped in its present configuration.

What purpose does this table serve? If you cannot answer that question on any given piece of furniture, the furniture should exit.

I’d put the lamp on a small stack of books, as well as bring it out from the corner just a bit. For inside, I’d have a couple of baskets on bottom with maybe small books for your kids. When mine was little, I kept a basket of little books we’d read to her, in the living room.

For the inside top shelves, what do you like? Choices are unlimited. Collect things you enjoy looking at. A piece of coral, a pretty piece of pottery, interesting candleholders (without the candles), animal statue ... the list goes on and on. I don’t know how old your kids are, but my DD was obsessed with rocks as a toddler/kid. I found this heavy stone, antique lidded container to display some in. These rocks inside it are from a visit to Cape Cod, over 20 yrs ago. To the right, old cowbells I find.

My goal would be to make it look like a loved piece that belongs there, rather than a piece of furniture stuck there because there’s nowhere else to put it. And decorating it with personal, eclectic, collected items will accomplish that. I think you’ve made a good start with the lamp, it’s very cozy looking.
