I've always been an audiophile since I was a teenager and always wanted to put a home theater in my house one day. After having one in my first house I quickly learned its not practical at all. The only purpose for having and actual home theater in your house is to make an impression when people come over. Thats it. In my house now, I still set everything up like a home theater but I just put a regular living room set. (Leather couch, loveseat, coffee & end tables.) Its way more practical and enjoyable. Me and my boo can lay down together. I can place snacks and drinks in the middle coffee table for guests to enjoy. Real home theater looks cool but not good to have in your house. Most important is your equipment. I have about $50,000 in just audio equipment that I even found bargain hunting. The nicest home theater in the world means nothing if your equipment is old or cheap. My theater blows away anything IMAX has to offer. I've had people over so many times say "I feel like I'm really there" whether we're watching a movie or game. LOL I just don't like it when I have old people over. They always complain its to loud LOL.

I find mine to be extremely practical. We use it often. My equipment is neither old nor cheap but also not overpriced. I did not build it to impress anyone. We rarely have anyone but family using it. My house is 7,500 sf so I have plenty of room for a home theater. Perhaps you do not.

My house is 5,000 sqft so I have plenty of room also. My theater is open to the whole basement so everyone can enjoy while playing pool, at the poker table or bar, foosball, darts, workout area, ECT.. I don't have to shove everyone in one room to enjoy it. Like I said, its way more practical and enjoyable in every way. Having an actual home theater, been there done that. By the way, a good 80"+ LED 4K-8K, HDR TV with a high contrast ratio and refresh rate is miles better than an over head projector. Picture is unmatched and you can still see it just as good with the lights on.

The goal was to watch movies under the best possible conditions. The room is sound and light controlled. It has dedicated heating and cooling (both dead silent). Equipment is in a separate closet with multiple dedicated circuits and its own cooling equipment. Each row of seating has 6 12" subs underneath them for high quality tactile LFE. In addition there are 3 18" and 4 15" subs. There are a total of 36 speakers in the theater. My JVC 4k projector is plenty bright (I still run it on low bulb with ~750+ hours on it). While an 80" screen is no doubt nice (we have a 75" in our living room) it simply does not compare to a 135" 2.40:1 screen in the theater for being immersed in a movie. I am running a 9.5.6 surround set-up. The theater is dead quite - less than 35 decibels. I don't have to shove anyone into the theater - they come willingly.

When I finish the bar and game room there will be a more casual system setup for the occasional night of entertaining but for our family the theater is the place to be to watch movies.

What I have done cannot be duplicated in a casual entertaining environment. What I have done is exactly what I set out to do - create a superior movie watching experience.

Looks great! My theater room is my favorite room in my whole house and most practical! It's about the same size as yours. My kids and their friends are in it all the time. So many movie night sleepovers. They close the door and I don't hear a thing:) The VR is set up in there also so it's fun for friends to see what the person with headset is doing. You are going to love it! Really wish I had the dedicated heating and cooling. It gets hot doing VR.

Great looking home theater!!!! We are actually in the middle of building our own home theater/multipurpose game room. I noticed you are using an acoustically transparent screen with DIYsoundgroup LCR channels. Great choices! Care to share a little more about your setup, and what you would/wouldn’t do if you had to do it over? Any tips would be welcome!!

Not much I'd do differently overall. But here are a few things; I would use rubber under the wall framing to isolate it from the concrete floor. I would try even harder to find someone to replace my wood support beam with steel. At least one long enough to remove the support column in the front of the theater, if not both. This would be more for aesthetics than performance. I did try over a dozen different contractors with no luck. They either did not have the time or they lacked the ability. Being able to decouple the ceiling would have been sweet but there were just too many things to work around and I would have lost at least a foot in ceiling height. But even decoupled bass is going to escape when playing at reference levels. Mids and highs are pretty well contained within the theater.

I am running 2 Denon AVR's to get 9.x.6 layout. Still waiting for a reliable 9.1.6 processor. The 2 processor set-up is not perfect but it does come close enough to make the waiting bearable. I am running 3 18" subs up front and 4 15" subs in the rear. I have 6 12" subs under each seating platform (total of 12) to provide tactile sensations (and they work fantastically!). There are 36 speakers in total although the ones under the seat do not make sound - they just move the seats!

My screen is DIY made from 1x4's and 1 layer of white over 1 layer of black spandex. It is a 2.40:1 scope screen. It is 124" wide (135" diagonal). Spandex makes the best acoustic material for a screen but it does have the drawback of being a bit on the darker side (not a great reflector) so you need a brighter projector to light up the screen.

Thanks for the tips! This is great timing, we were just about ready to start building out the inner sound isolation walls, I never thought to decouple those from the concrete slab, I will make sure I do that with some 1/8” MLV, thank you!!

Spandex is a wonderful material, I was considering it but not sure I can afford the lumen loss, I’m going to be running an rs4500 with only about 2300 calibrated lumens for a 160” diagonal screen.

The number of subs you have in that size room is impressive. I’ll be running dual cap4000’s, hoping that will be enough, there’s really no space to add more subs inconspicuously despite the large room size.
