Must it be on an actual Kindle device, not the Kindle app on my iPad, even with Amazon Prime?

I have a Kindle but haven’t figured out how to search for a specific book within the Kindle Lending Library, rather than just endlessly scroll though the categories. Even googling how to do it does not really find directions for finding a specific book.

Try this:

On your Kindle, click on the Shopping Cart (Says “Store” underneath). Once in the Store, click on the three vertical dots to the right, then click on Kimdle Owners‘ Lending Library, then search for the book. Click on the title if it comes up. If it is available in the Lending Library, it will say “borrow for free” with Kindle Lending Library. If you don’t see that, then it‘s not in the lending library.

If you want to share the name of the book, I can try to search for it on my kindle.

. I was following all the directions but could not search for a specific title. With your instructions, I could find the book and see it is not PRIME eligible. AT least I learned how to search and I thank you.I just tried reading the actual book and lo and behold it's on very nice white paper and good size fonts so I am enjoying it. The book is The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hill.

I'm glad you figured it out. It is confusing. Kindle Unlimited, Prime free borrowing and the Kindle Lending library are all needlessly lumped together. As you mentioned in your first post, I think it is by design.

salonva, that is so weird that you couldn’t find that book because that is the only book I have ever borrowed from the lending library! In fact, while I was fooling around with it this afternoon trying to answer you question, I tried to borrow a random book. It said I couldn’t borrow one until I returned the previous book I borrowed....which was the Sam Hill book that it says I borrowed in 2018! The funny thing is when I “borrowed” that book, I originally thought I had downloaded it from my library/Overdrive. Then somehow figured out it was from the lending library. Having never done that before, I guess I assumed it would return automatically after a certain time frame like my library books do, but apparently not. I had no idea it was still “borrowed” to my Kindle. I wonder if there was only one license for the copy and that’s why you couldn’t borrow it? If so, I’m sorry!

With the Kindle you can also lend books to other Kindle owners. I do this sometimes with my brother; the person you lend the book to has 14 days to read it. This annoys me a bit because my DH is a slooooow reader so if I purchase a book and he wants to read it we have to swap kindles because lending time frame will not be long enough for him.

I think that if he puts his Kindle into airplane mode before the 14 days are up, then he will be able to continue reading it. Someone recently posted that they use this "trick" to keep books borrowed from the library longer.

I second using airplane mode to have longer to read a book. I do it all the time. I keep my Kindle in airplane mode to extend the intervals between recharging the battery, too.

In the curious and curiouser world, I just went back to see and when I searched for the book by name, and then clicked on it, it showed Kindle Lender Library so I am downloading it now. So glad I just checked back and this hive is just superb!! Now I have the best of both worlds- the book AND kindle. Thank you thank you thank you.

And yes, If you put on airplane mode once you have the book, it stays on your kindle until you take off airplane mode. Off to read the book on my kindle! So funny @4kids4us it's such an under the radar book and that you have read it on kindle is just too bizarre.

I use Prime Reading and love it. (I have only the Kindle app, no actual Kindle). I've been able to borrow lots of books, free of charge, kind of an odd spectrum of available titles. Right now, working on Philip K Dick's The Man in the High Castle. Several very good cookbooks (Myers+Chang at Home, Julia Turshen's Small Victories). Some excellent thrillers (several books by Thomas Perry!), some pretty dreadful ones ... I just search for Prime Reading on Amazon.

I quit reading for the last 3 years. I plan to start up again in one more year. I have been collecting books titles that I will be reading and think I will use a Kindle type thing and a lending Library. I devoted all of my moments to working a ton and to getting all of our finances stuff and house and all of our paperwork in order. In a year I will feel like I will have leisure time again.

I just want to thank you all ... we got my DD a Paperwhite for Christmas and didn’t know of this lending feature. I showed her this thread and she’s already borrowed her first book. Thank you! :)

Jinx, has she figured out how to borrow ebooks from her library and have them delivered directly to her Kindle? I use Overdrive and I love it.

Jinx, I love my Kindle Paperwhite. You daughter can borrow books from her local library to read on her Kindle. I also pay for Kindle Unlimited ($85/yr) because 1 book a month was insufficient for me.

I also use a Kindle paperwhite and love to read. I live in WNY and joined the NYC Public Library so I could download free books from them. You need to be a NY resident and send them proof to be approved. My local library had such a small collection, so I was thrilled to learn I could join the NYC Public Library with their extensive selection. If you're not from NY, see what's the largest library in your state and see if you can join to download ebooks.

I mostly use the library (which is a county wide library system and I believe may pull across the state). Occasionally though, a kindle book is not available from the library. I know sometimes amazon has promotions but I was super happy to be able to use the lending library for prime members. LOVE my paper white, and LOVE not having to wait for the library to be open to borrow from the library and or amazon.

As an aside, there is another site, gutenberg.org which has all free ebooks, most of which are older and no longer subject to copyright$$. I have found some wonderful classics there (such as Three Men in a Boat)
