Plants in my yard are also saying its been cold but not freezing... so several coleus, some tuberous begonias, banana's, alocasias are still unhappy but alive vs browned down. Iochroma is blooming and untouched.... Neighbors tomatoes still growing and fruiting(green) ...

Nancy its a slam dunk to grow Ti in Venice. I have a Croton doing fine through its second bay area winter outdoors...no special protection. Under the coverage of a big potted variegated Ficus elastica..but you know..no cloth and all that. I have a vibrant pink Ti out there too.

The key for them is too give them a large enough pot and put a deep saucer under them. UNLESS,you have hard salty water. I found the saucer thing just made it look as if I had it on drip irrigation..water was there for it almost all summer.

I don't want to jinx it, but yes we usually have our low in December... I am still influenced by the big freeze in 1990 (19F) a full 10 degrees below typical lows...which cracked pots and killed both my Tasmanian and Australian tree ferns in Campbell CA

I have had no luck with crotons indoors or outdoors.

I just remembered that I have the common ti plants in the yard -- close to the house because of size (narrow bed in a small lot) -- for 20+ years. The plants are slow growing, but doing OK.

Yes I have 3 jalapeño plants still producing in my raised bed . They normally die in November .

I feel like it's been so cold this year in the Gold Country, but come to think of it I have several begonias and a little scraggly tomato volunteer on my back deck that seem to be just fine. Must be a little less chilly at night anyway. There has been so much rain this winter and that definitely keeps things warmer at least where I am.

My Croton is in a pot outdoors. The key is as much winter sun as possible,keeping on the dry side and then in summer..not so much full sun. They can burn over 90F and dry air.

Still,sun is for sure needed by them here.

One tip? The Angel wings are hardiest types..look for those.
