Does your convection fan run only when heating - gas?

Hi

i have a BlueStar range. When I purchased it the convect fan would run all the time that the switch was on. Then there was a recall because this caused a couple of explosions. Now after the “fix” the fan runs only when the oven burner is lit.

Is this the same for all gas ranges? The fan was much more effective when it ran constantly - but not blowing up the kitchen is nice too.

Thanks

Maybe I'm not understanding the situation. What I thought (from what I've read here) was that the fix is supposed to keep a Blue Star's convection fan from running until the bake burner ignites for the first time and also prevents the fan from running at all whenever the oven is set to broil. Is it now the case that the fan now shuts off whenever the burner cycles off and only comes back on while the burner is cycling on in order to maintain the set temperature? If so, that strikes me as a strange fix. I can see how that would be, shall we say, a good deal less than optimal.

FWIW, in the oven on my 8 year-old NXR, the fan will run whenever switched to on except when the oven dial is turned to the broil settings; an interlock wired to the dial disconnects the fan when the dial is turned up to the broil settings. Otherwise, the fan runs whether the oven burners are on or not. I don't have enough recent experience with other gas ranges to comment on them, but hopefully, my bumping your post will get you more responses.

    Hi

Im not sure if it ever came on with broil.

It now comes on only after the burner goes off. It stays on until the burner comes back on. Flame = no fan. Not great. I questioned the guy who “fixed” it and he said this is what it was supposed to do - he installed a relay. He also said all gas ranges were like this but I’d like to hear from others. Surely some must have a better design.

I have an all gas Wolf range and it does just that (the convection fan only runs when the convection fan switch is on).

I previously had an all gas GE and Whirpool and they worked in the same way. I thought that's how the gas ranges with convection fans are supposed to operate, but perhaps I'm not understanding the question?

I think there was a poster here that was upset because the fan shut off when the burner was on after the “repair”. It only ran when the burner was off. I would call BS directly and ask.

I’ve asked BlueStar. I think the tech told me that to make me feel better. I’ll let you know what they say.

On my monogram, the convection fan only works when the burners are off, ie. set temperature met. It will also automatically turn off when I open the oven door. The problem with running the fans with the burners on is that the air flow can result in unburnt gas which can explode when it accumulates in the oven.

Garth: If your range now allows the convection fan to run only when the burner is lit, the guy who installed the fix did it backwards (wrong relay contacts)!!!

The fix after the recall allows the convection fan to run only when no gas is flowing in either the oven or broiler burners. This prevents the fan from blowing any unignited gas away from the surface igniter element and collecting in other parts of the oven, making for a potential explosion hazard.

The fix consists of an added relay whose contacts are in series with the convection fan on/off switch. Its coil is connected in parallel with the oven 'on' indicator light.

Light on (gas on) => Convection fan off.

The fix was never necessary if the user followed the directions in the manual to never turn the fan on when using the broiler or when the oven was preheating. It just forces that functionality at the expense of not ever letting the fan run while the oven burner is lit, even after preheating. The convection fan is still effective since the burner on time is only about a quarter of the on/off temperature control cycle:

Sorry for the mix up. You are right. The fan is now off when the burner is lit. I liked it better before the “fix”. Figures that people not following directions caused this problem.

Did BlueStar ”fix” all of their ranges or just some models? Do their new ones operate like this? How about other brands?

    Thanks

BlueStar confirmed that it was customers turning the fan on before the oven was hot that caused this problem. Too bad.

A switch that allowed the fan to come on only after a certain temperature was reached would have been nice. Oh well.

I found instructions online on how to install the relay “fix” so I should be able to restore the range to how it was before.

    Thanks for the help.

I have a brand new BlueStar RNB 30" range. The fan doesn't work if the heating element is on. Period. You couldn't turn it on during preheat even if you wanted to. If you flip the switch while the oven is preheating nothing will happen UNTIL the desired temp is reached. Then the fan will start. When the oven light goes off signaling that the desired temp has been reached the fan will start to blow. As the temp fluctuates within the oven , whether due to you opening the oven door to check on food/add food or because it cycles on and off to maintain the desired temp , the fan goes off and then comes back on when the heating element cuts off.

There isn't anything you can do about this and the relay isn't wrong. This is a safety feature and isn't a problem. The amount of time the fan is off is very short due to the very good insulation on the oven.

Even with good insulation it’s off enough that it’s noticeable to me. I liked it better before and will switch it back when I have the time. If I had been fully informed I wouldn’t have had it done. I now know that it was an “optional“ recall and that as long as you wait for the oven to heat initially its fine.

lol. Bluestar is trying to idiot proof their product but you want to be able to act like an idiot. Maybe change out the gas regulator and increase th burner size while you defeat their fix. Bigger explosion risk that way.

just fyi, no legitimate residential range is going to run the convection fan while the burners are going. That just doesn't make sense.

They made thousands of ranges where the fan ran when the flame was on. It was only after a few people didn’t follow the directions and blew up their stoves that there was a “problem”

By the way I did boost up the btu on the big burner up top. Works great!

if I could do this to the oven I would. It talked way too long to heat up.

my old ge cafe fan ran no matter flame or no flame..considering the flame is +1000 degrees? I think it would be nice to circulate it?
