Master Bedroom Help

last modified: 6 years ago

Need help softening and making gold master bedroom more feminine. The room measures 15Ft by 14Ft. Bed is King and takes 7ft of space across the room. Ceiling is 7.5 ft/9ft. Window are 2ft w by 7ft tall. The paint color is Sherwin Williams Restrained Gold. I've repainted this room twice this past year so repainting is not an option. A local designer helped me warm up the space and came up with this and I didn't like it so I stopped doing anything with it. I would like to make it softer and more feminine, maybe florals but I'm not sure of colors except I don't want reds, or burgundy unless it's very soft and muted. The furniture, carpet and wall color have to stay but everything else can be replaced to achieve a softer look. Help! Thank you.

I would add more white and/off white as well

I’m not a pro. Get rid of the golden walls. You have gray/bluish/beige carpet. Mixing warm and cool is hard.

The pretty celadon color bedside lamps read feminine to me. Replacing the ceiling fan with a chandelier would certainly read feminine as well. While changing the carpet is not planned, perhaps you could add a large floral area rug on top that picks up some of the celadon color. Or you could add a sisal-look area rug that is a warmer neutral that coordinates better with the wall color. I'd also consider a really oversized (like 5-ft square) art for the large blank wall to the right of the bed. The art could be as simple as stretched fabric, or canvas painted with white/ecru abstract design.

I love to add some patterned fabric....one or more of the following: draperies or drapery panels with room-darkening window shades, perhaps an upholstered cornice, a recovered loveseat at the foot of the bed, an upholstered chair or two. NancyD shows a beautiful fabric which has both deep gold and silvery-gray, but if that pattern is not your style there will be quite a few other patterned fabrics which have those two colors. I had Calico Corners (now known as Calico) do coordinated drapery panels and upholstered cornices in our three bedrooms (three different color palettes, so three different fabric selections)...and they did a beautiful job. The master bedroom got a reupholstered loveseat.

Thanks everyone! @Mark Brunner I never realized how gray the carpet looks against this wall. I really want to paint the room but am so pained by spending the money again. @NancyD I've actually been looking at floral prints that would soothe my soul and soften the room. I like the idea of finding floral prints that match the colors on the lamps.

I love your room and the one thing that stands out that I'd want to change is the carpet. Do you have hardwood hiding under there?

@tfitz1006 I wish there were wood floors but sadly no.

You have many options to feminize your bedroom if you do not repaint the walls or ceiling. Wallpapering the back wall behind bed and getting new lamps and nightstands. New chandelier or ceiling fan. Rug or rugs for texture. Simple bedding with clean lines and artwork to unite the space. Mirror over bed. Lots of nice options to have fun with redesigning your space. Best of Luck. Window treatments to complete the look.

I first noticed the gray of the carpet against the gold walls, as well. You should be able to find a print with both gray and gold/beige, which would help bring the room together. Or, an area rug over the carpet that has the gold in it would help. Metallic accents mixing the silver/gray and gold/beige would also help.

Colors in the bedding like this would anchor your walls and carpet.

This may end up double posting, but it looks like the first did not work... will do in pieces.

Here an area rug and fabric pendant replacing ceiling fan.

I think sheer light drapes at your windows, with each drape split as in photo below would look prettier. Hadn't noticed until now, but this also shows area rug laid on top of carpet. Never my first choice, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to make the colors work together.

The small windows are dwarfed by the huge bed. Have you tried placing it opposite the entry door? Extend the drapery rods all the way to the side walls and then take the other end out an equal distance from the window frame. Add another drapery panel to each side and push them as far right and left as you can. Put the tall chest between the windows. Add new feminine art. I would pick up on the blue from your lamps. One thing you need are more substantial night stands. Let the bedding, pillows, throw, a chair and art add the femininity to your room. A chandy overhead will make a huge statement. I agree that the rug is a problem. Save up for hardwood flooring and a large rug to slip under the bed.

Not a designer but your carpet n walls just seem to be busy together not relaxing n feminine kwim. The picture attached has a rug similar to your carpet and the wall paint picks up the color n darker heavy furniture similar to yours but feminine with the light drapes n bedding Not sure of your feminine style. I have a SIL that still likes the ruffle bed skirtd n ruffle drapes :-). Have fun finding your style

@Jodie White Designs nice look but not feminine to me. Will keep those elements in mind as I look tho, thanks. Thanks @everdebz - like the blues in the fabric prints. Getting excited. Thanks for including the links. That really helps give me ideas.

I appreciate everyone's input! I have decided to paint the room since carpet is new. There are gold specks in the carpet but it's not working - it's by Shaw called Angel Wings. So now I start in the beginning and look for wall colors that would work with carpet. That's overwhelming.

I think it’s important to work with what you cannot change (in this case, your rug), what you’d like to emphasize most (this can vary), and what is easiest to change (paint). Try to consider your rug from afar, at least from the angle you see outside the room. Those flecks are gold, but comments have been made about the gray, the cool tones of the rug. Work with the most obvious color(s) you see in the rug.
People always talk about an “inspiration piece.” If you want your bed to be the star, look for a comforter, maybe in a print or floral if that’s what you like, that compliments the rug or at least works with it. Or, it could be curtains in a pattern or a piece of art for the open spot on your wall. You might even start with those beautiful lamps.
Finally, choose a paint color. Paint comes in so many colors, why works backwards trying to find fabric or items that go with wall color?

Harperqt - I am SO pleased that you've decided to repaint. In the end, it will cost less than trying to jump through so many hoops to reconcile the carpet and the paint color. Well-done!

I looked at your idea board u like a feminine glam silk shimmer. Look for a luxury style comforter that complement the color elements in your room that are staying the Dark furniture n carpet. Add new light a chandelier Then get lots if samples paint on wall several different locations in room look at it day n night with new lighting Light reflects color at different angles and your bulbs will also change paint color.

I skimmed back reading decoenthusiaste's suggestion about nightstands. Silver finish on veneers, and beveled mirror drawer front - is it like your vanity's soft finish at all? and like carpeting?

Keep us posted on the color you choose and I think you will be happier as you were not happy with the current paint color. Paint is transforming.

Hello, the room is beautiful, however, as a contractor, i would suggest due to the ceiling being so low, to change the ceiling color to white. I also would remove ceiling fan and replace it with a crystal ceiling mount chandelier. Your ceiling is too low for a fan that hangs so low. A beautiful Crystal Ceiling Mount Chandelier would truly accent the room.
It would also be advisable to remove some of the furniture so the room would look much bigger. The room appears crowded with not enough space. White carpet or ivory carpet would also bring out the room.
