Have you been able to get it to drain? I'd turn the timer dial to final spin and see if it will drain. If you're lucky, it's just the coupler that needs to be replaced.

it is 28 years old. I would spend alot of time or money trying to get it back on track. If you can't fix it yourself, then I would toss it. Parts supply may be an issue as well

All the major mechanical parts are/should be still available. Whirlpool produced this washer mechanical design up to 2010. The iffy parts would be model-specific items such as the timer.

Burning odor may be a wire. I had that happen on a sibling WP model a few years ago. The motor capacitor may have caused it, the motor couldn't start, two wires overheated and burned ... one of the wires connecting to the capacitor and one of the wires (low speed) connected to the motor. Or maybe it was just the two wires but the capacitor tested iffy so I replaced it. Simple fix for a DIYer.

Diagnosing a problem from afar is tricky ... especially when the poster replies with gibberish. I would not expect this individual to be an able DIYer so it's her call whether she wants to invest in a service call, even if the problem may be simple.
