Constance Spry is a "once" bloomer. It was David Austin's first bred rose to be released.

Constance Spry was a favorite because it was different from anything else thirty years ago; I loved the breeding; it was a beautiful flower and the powerful scent was unlike anything else. The lady for whom it was named was an extremely interesting Renaissance type character who I find fascinating. And, David Austin was a virtual "new comer". There is no repeat and if mildew is an issue where you are, get ready for it.

There are NUMEROUS fragrant, repeat flowering climbing roses on the market. What to recommend would honestly depend upon where you are so those of us making the suggestions might have an idea what might be commercially available there. It's not helpful to suggest something you can't buy.

Thank you. Now, have you a color preference? Would you prefer open flowers like Constance's; HT form or something more "Austin"? MANY of the Austin roses are climbers in SoCal. That's been one of their worst "problems" for many who have tried growing them there.

Roseseek: I have a yard full of Austins the one that I dont care to much for is gertrude jekyll, just never really took off well in my yard. Color pink or lavender, Im open to rose form as long as its very fragrant. and repeats well.

Constance Spry is a glorious rose, and it has a magnificent flush, but does not repeat bloom at all. On its own roots it will sucker magnificently.

It has some of the characteristics of the old roses from which it was bred.

As with any scent, whether or not it will be good for you depends upon weather and your nose, but the rose IS magnificent and I know it grows marvelously everywhere I've grown and seen it in the LA area.

Roseseek gives great advice. I would also recommend Renea. It is thornless, fragrant and can take heat.

Maybe I will give Constance Spry a chance, and grow another rose with it. I know I want to put MH in another part of my yard that needs some perking up.
