Removing old gas range hood

I have successfully removed an old gas range and hood from my kitchen, but I'm stumped at this stage. The old chimney, or vent shaft, (I'm not sure what it's called which is my main problem) is still connected. I'm planning on installing an over range microwave here next.

I added the gray duct tape as it is just open and filled with old insulation around the wall opening.

Do I remove this piece? What is it called? Will it be compatible with a new over range microwave? Thanks for any advice!

It's called duct work. If you don't actually need it anymore, remove it and seal the opening.

Probably. Get the install instructions for the microwave and read about venting.

MY (GE) over the range microwave came with templates so as to allow (re) locating the old duct to be compatible with the new microwave. Also, the microwave could be vented either to the rear of installation or to the top.

Go online and get a copy of the installation manual for the microwave. You likely can take care of this vent installation before even purchasing the unit.

I have a GE Advantium over my range. It takes up no more space than a range hood, it has a Convection Oven and a Rapid Cook Oven as well as a microwave and allows exhaust either to the outside or down draft.

No idea why anyone would suggest it is "the worst place" - indeed, it is the best place as far as space utilization!

Why give up cabinet or counter space?
