Corner decorating Dilemma

I am having trouble figuring out what to do with my poor blah dining room. It is a small but is apart of an open concept the rest of the house (kitchen/living room/foyer).

I want to use these lamps in the dining room but not sure how to display them. The table lamps are going to donation and I do not wish to use them.

Everything in the dining room can be replaced (except lamps and buffet) so please don’t hold back on advice!!!

Put lamps on buffet...might need just one. If so, use other one some place else.

I agree, put the lamps on the buffet and take another picture. I don't think the end tables (that the lamps are currently on) are appropriate for a dining room, and I would remove them. The rug is fighting with the curtains. One of those two should be switched out.

I think your rug is too small. I’d switch to a round rug.

I like the blue painting with the wall color, but not with the curtains and rug. Maybe a larger, plainer rug if you are keeping the curtains.

If I put the lamps on the buffet, what should I do with the walls by the window? Plants? Shelves ?

You say the table lamps are going to donation? What lamps are you keeping? Put nothing on the walls next to the draperies other than the art if you want to leave it. Although, the size of the art pieces hanging there would look better if stacked and two others the same size added on the other size (can you get two more?). If you remove the lamps and leave the single pictures, they should be lowered a bit. As should the large painting...move it down about half the distance of the wall space above the buffet/ console.

What is the white around your window outside of the shade? I was going to suggest widening your drapery rod and getting a second set of draperies to make them fuller and fill in that wall a bit, but can't figure out why your shade is so small? Or maybe I'm just not seeing it correctly? Small screens and all.

Oh, and try moving your chairs 1/8 turn around the table so the chairs sit on the corners of the rug. It will help fill in some of that visual space on the window wall.

MY question is what lamps are going out and what ones are you keeping the statement makes no sense. The chandelier and the drapes do not belong in the same space . The end tables need to be removed the art hung lower . I would use a nice blue from the art for drape fabric. The rug is too small the upholstery looks to be in poor condition and IMO that buffet cannot hold 2 lamps it is just not long enough

In my opinion the little tables look like they were put there just to fill up space. And frankly it makes everything looks cramped and cluttered. I would try removing those tables and take new pics.

More thoughts: the drapes are too skimpy and a bit too matchy with the rug. Simple, fuller, off-white or beige, textured drapes would be a better look imo. I hope one of our fabulous photo shoppers comes by to help with visuals!

I agree with one lamp on the buffet. Symmetry is overrated;-)

There are a few things in the room that are not cohesive.

For an inexpensive fix (as you said you could get rid of table and chairs),

I would chalk paint the table and chairs in white, recover chairs. Take down the drapery and leave bare for now. Rug is too small. Wait til you decide what you are doing before purchasing

    new rug.

Lower the picture over the credenza. Place one lamp on left and hang picture on right side to balance. You may have to get a white shade to go with rest of decor.

Remove those 2 small pictures anyway.

The blue and white art does not blend with the gold tones in the room.

Which way do you want to go?

Bev, you used my favorite wall art!! Love your mock up! Someone suggested white textured curtains. I’ve heard great things about ikea’s Ritva curtains and they’re very affordable!

The lamps I would prefer to keep in there are the Laurel lamps shown. The lamps are not being donated. Just the ugly end tables. Is there anyway I can incorporate the lamps somewhere in the room?

The end tables are ONLY there for the lamps. I like having light in that room at night because my house is open concept to the DR, LR, Foyer and Kitchen. The LAMP TABLES are to be donated not my lamps.

My house was built in 78’ by a drunk architect I think. We have a very odd layout and windows. The white you see is all window with a big ledge. You should be able to make that out in the photo. If not, I can take a closer up.

We purchased the chandelier when we first moved in a few years ago. I had a different “vision” for the dining room at the time and obviously didn’t stick to it over the years. I’m open to changing that.

As for the walls, is everyone suggesting to have the big wall with one painting and leave the other walls bare?

Also, are the thoughts on doing this with the curtains? Just the position of the curtains on that wall?

I agree with most of the suggestions above. I love the idea of curtains across the one wall having the leading edge just at the window casing. This will fill the empty wall space that seems to bother you. If not wanting to do that, then place art there about the size you have, but I'd put two pieces on each side one on top of the other. The chandelier does not go with the style of the table/chairs or buffet so I would switch that out. The rug is too small for the space so I would get a larger size. I like your art, but it is hung too high so lower it about 6 inches above the buffet. Use the color in your art for inspiration for the room. I lovely neutral on the wall BM White Sand is a lovely color and you can pick up the creams/blues in your rug. I don't think you can use both lamps on the buffet, but perhaps you could if you swapped out the shade for a smaller one. It's hard to tell. Put them on the buffet and post a photo. If not, then just one, and perhaps the other in an adjoining room.

I think the window is large enough that you could fill the wall with curtains. What kind of look are you going for here? Formal, casual? Try the lamps on the buffet and see if two are too big. I don't mind the curtains but you need a few more pairs to be sure they're full enough. I also don't mind your table-I think it fits well in the space. It looks as though your chairs are ready to be replaced though and I agree you need a larger rug. I don't think the chandelier works with the mid mod style of the buffet and lamps. You need something a bit lighter and airier. This is well priced and a nice size.

Rug is too small. Your artwork colors are cool and the rug/drapes are warm. I think pick one version and go with it. I like the idea of spanning the window wall with curtains. I like the light katinparadise posted but also something MCM will fit with your sideboard. A plant would be great to bring in color and texture.

Taking some of the suggestions, what do you all think of these?

    Curtains

How large do I need to get the rug regardless oval or rectangle? The one in there now is 5x7.

Should I stick with a round table or do a short rectangle table?

Should I do solid (textured) curtains and rug? Similar in color?

Do I need anything under the window or leave it alone?

Oversized Vertical painting over the buffet as in the photo BeverlyFLADezier suggested?

If your current rug is 5 x 7, you should go to 8 x 10. The chairs should all be on the rug when the chairs are pulled out. I think the table you have is fine. I think the art work you have is nice so I would pull the colors from that. Cream/Ivory drapes and a rug with some cream/ivory tones.I wouldn't do grommet top curtains in a dining room. I like some of the chandeliers, but would prefer fabric shades to glass - https://www.birchlane.com/lighting/pdp/goin-6-light-shaded-classic-traditional-chandelier-b000049603.html?piid=454268084 -

I agree with Design Girl's suggestion for rug size. Cream, ivory, or a natural linen color would look nice for drapes. I like back tabs or pole pockets hung with rings-they look a little nicer and hang better than grommets. Be sure they're lined too. As far as a chandelier, glass is a bit more casual, shades more formal, IMO.
