I don't need motivation to start a quilt except for the initial decision-making on what I want to do. I know that I'm going to make another quilt, but what? That is my biggest hurdle in the beginning. As for finishing, that's another story. Sometimes I overdo the technique or the design, etc. and it becomes a chore to finish. Or I suddenly decide I just don't like the design or colors after all. Or I run into some kind of glitch that I didn't foresee. I have to psych myself into finishing sometimes - for instance, I tell myself that the quilt police don't really exist and no-one really cares if there are flubs in the results but me. Most of the time the piecing is a breeze to me, hardly ever any problems. It's in the quilting that I usually run into trouble. And this last quilt - the pieced backing became too complicated and unnecessary. I also rarely plan a quilt for someone or something in particular. For some reason it's better if I just make a quilt and then decide if I want to give it away and to whom. Of course baby quilts are a different story but in my world there aren't a lot of those. I guess quilting is a pleasurable activity for me and any time there is commitment involved it kills my motivation. I know, it's weird.

I sometimes get tired of a quilt before it is finished. I find that if I just go back to working on it, that I enjoy it again. I will make myself finish a top before I start sewing another. It is satisfying for me to finish and clean up my sewing area before starting another.

I definitely find it more fun to start something new. But I really enjoy the feeling after something is finished, so that it what motivates me to finish quilts. I also don't like too many UFOs, like I have right now, so that is motivation to finish. The wallhanging has been the only quilt that I just didn't want to work on due to the stippling. I just found it tedious.
