I would have a simple console table built to fit behind the column, stained the same way as the beam. Then place artwork over the table. It gives you a place to set something down, doesn't impede the walkway, and will look like it belongs with the beam. If you have enough space, you can run it from edge to edge, or if the walkway is tight near the bedrooms, start it at the beam and run it to the family room edge.

The posts are 14 1/2” from the wall. What do you think about having the wall painted Navy? To go with blues in my furniture and accents. Maybe it would lessen the contrast of white behind it? (I know it’s green right now.)

Navy or any color that coordinates with the other parts of the space would be fine for the wall.

Paint the walls as all the other, and let it be the "feature it IS". Resist the urge to junk up the walls or the hallway.

Otherwise? Paint it creamy AS the walls, dead end at the top........and it will disappear into the wall. Then don't junk anything up : )

Navt? Not unless you're going to paint the post navy . You don't need a "feature" wall competing with the feature in front of it, and ten still be looking for more to add....................no.

That's an option too. Build a knee wall around it, no open 14 inches behind........and paint. Would i ?No.I think it suits the ceiling. Doesn't bother me at all, actually. You will create trim issues above......not worth it. It's a FEATURE :)

No to a colored wall and honestly I think I would build out the wall or do some really cool shelving with awesome stuff on them.

Agree, it is an architecture feature of the home.

I’m with Jan — since it’s in an open hallway/landing area, I wouldn’t do shelves or highlight it. I’d just let it be what it is and decorate around it as any normal architectural feature. I wouldn’t do the wall behind it in an accent color, the wood stain here would look wonderful with Swiss Coffee behind it. Imo, an accent color would just put more focus on it, rather than help it look like a calm and integrated part of the area.

Even though you have a light above it, I love lamps in hallways/landings, so would probably just do a simple table with lamp there. A rug would bring some depth and softness there, too.

I don’t know your tastes, just using the items below for mock-up purposes .... obviously, the table would be flat on wall, not angled.

Or, you could have no furniture there, and just hang up pretty art (I’d still do a rug).

I can see how it would bother you to have the 14” of space behind the column. It does feel a little bit awkward to me. I’d rather incorporate some shelves to tie it into the space/anchor it to the wall behind from about 3’ to 7’ height, and varying widths. And the lead the eye up to that gorgeous ceiling with lighting or wall scones. I love the way the shelves are tied to the column in the first picture.

Thanks for all your advise! I will NOT paint the wall navy, and building it out is not an option right now. I will embrace the quirk!
