Marble vs ceramic backsplash or can they live together?

Trying to determine whether we should select a marble field tile or ceramic subway? The countertop is relatively busy —see picture. We don’t want the marble tile to compete with the countertops (would need to select a toned down marble field tile) or could select a white subway. Thoughts?

My other questions are: could we select a ceramic subway tile and still frame a simple/toned down marble mosaic over our rangetop? Or would this look disjointed? Not confident as to whether marble and ceramic can live together.

I would not pair marble with that counter. The counter is beautiful with a lot of movement. Let it shine, rather than giving it another natural stone patterns with which to compete.

You can always pair ceramic tile with marble. Is that countertop marble? However, you can't pair marble with that countertop. Select a quiet solid color ceramic tile in a cream color to go with the lightest color in the counters. Don't go crazy with patterns, etc. Your counter is the star and as such the backsplash should be quiet. Don't frame a section of the counter above the range. That's a pretty dated look. Just keep it simple. Subway tile is fine.
