I think you can go either way. If you leave it navy, I'd paint the dining room ceiling Revere Pewter, to pull the other rooms in. Also, if you leave it Navy, make sure your other rooms have some touches of Navy.

I also love the navy. I have a navy DR. Gray would be boring. Any chance you can get 2 more curtain panels? It would look better if they were fuller. Maybe put the plant on a stand so it is more visible. Love your art work

What was it painted before? R.Pewter wouldn't 'show' the 3 things - art, metal chandelier, or shelves.

Another vote for keeping the navy. It was a great choice in there and really sets the room apart ... but in a cohesive way, which can be tough to do. I love it. It’s really pretty. :)

Hi Kendayl. You have done an overall nice job on the room. When adding decor it is important to balance the scale of the design elements. Drapes: small pattern, art: a lot of small patterns within the art, center bowl: the balls represent another small pattern. Finally, the shelves have a mix of small items on them.

Here is just one example of how patterns were mixed well in a dining room.

Art: large pattern, branch: small pattern, flowers: medium pattern. They work well together. Hope that helps.

We’re keeping the shelves for now As I thought they flowed with the rug and plant basket. The Art will eventually be replaced. Would love any links or suggestions you may have.

Are you going for a nautical or coastal theme or just want some natural elements?

PS.....I'd consider placing all 3 farmhouse chairs on each side and the hostess chairs I'd place in the corners or the front hall. The smaller farmhouse chairs in the corner seem dwarfed by the taller chairs.

A 3rd option would be to simply remove the farmhouse chairs and use them elsewhere.

My house is a mix of transitional and coastal but I’m trying not to be too beachy if that makes sense. (We’re slowly re-doing things so it’s a mix. I want timeless with the airy/ breezy vibes without being beachy. (Not sure ive done the best job)
Was thinking of adding a y’all plant on the shelves? Candle sticks in the middle of the table? Would love to work with what we have (shelves) but update accessories and balance the room.

This is our half bath and office space that are across the hall from the dining room. The half bath still needs to be styled (I’m stuck! But would love a little color) and the table and chairs is from our eat in kitchen area.

CDR Design LLC, we are planning to replace the farmhouse chairs with Ballard Dayana chairs. But i agree with you.

One way to make shelves seem less busy is to use a collection. So, it could be a collection of vases, for example. Vases all the same color: even less busy. I'd use some earthy ones and eliminate the sea urchin (if that is what it is). Place the vases close together to form a solid look.

For the table, I totally agree about the candles. You might consider a long narrow tray that is about 2/3 the length of the table. You can add luminara candles (they are awesome....have you ever used them?) Fill the tray with them. During the holidays, you can embellish them with decor.

For the art, I'd use an abstract that has blue and taupy colors.

What a pretty house! Have you tried swapping the kitchen and dining chairs with each other? I'm kind of thinking the side chairs in the dining room may be a tad too low, but that could just be due to the camera angle or something. I know you didn’t ask for anyone’s opinion on the chairs, so I hope I’m not overstepping. Btw, have you considered painting the ceiling in the powder room the same navy blue? I think that’d look great! Or maybe paint the baseboard, door and trim navy—but just inside the bathroom. And I love the paper in there. Where’s it from?

What is your table length? Restoration Hardware, for one has some. Crate and Barrel has one also (it is black (contrast) and even holds water if you ever want to do floating candles.

I honestly think the existing chairs are fine (just trying to save you some $). The BD chairs feel tropical and I think the ones you have now are actually more interesting. Maybe there is something I don't know.

Your house is gorgeous. Keep the navy. Beef up the curtains with more fabric. In terms of the shelves, I think odd numbers are more visually appealing, so I would remove one of them and rearrange the configuration accordingly. I love the natural wood against the navy.

I agree with what others have said about the shelves and drapes. The problem with the shelves is quantity and scale. You’re forced to use small scale items and that just doesn’t work for this room. Otherwise it looks nice. And I ask why knick knack it up in this room when you have the decorative office shelves (probably right across the hall - yes?)....The plate idea would work because you could do a random collection and then hide all the shelf holes :)

And whoever suggested swapping the white kitchen chairs with the off white dining (keep the host and hostess chairs as is) was onto something. I think the existing dining chair coordinates better with the pendant light / soft walls of the breakfast area and the crisp white of the existing kitchen chairs goes with the white wainscoting if the dining. Worth a try and post photos. Good luck!

I’ve moved some things around on the shelves for now, seems a little less cluttered to me at least for now... the curtains are actually fuller than they look, my kids play around them so they were pushed together. Need to work on the candles and bowl but for shopping my own house I like it so far.

... can't sleep ... you could say the shelves 'work' cause together they form the size of art piece.

The nature of water life and beach is to collect things. The large art grabs the focus, and bits of the coral, etc. bring the vibe to the handheld level. Of course, it's casual, "go girl!"

If any suggestion -- would be to add a distressed look to the shelves themselves, like the entry table has -- less yellow-ish. idk cause I'm not there in person.

Candles are a great start. I'd get a tray so they sit straight. It should be less wide, but longer than the dough bowl.

Shelves are very challenging to arrange. I would have chosen something else.... a mirror, 4 pieces of framed art with natural wood frames, etc.

If you really want the shelves, I would have chosen 3 that are much longer and more staggered. Also, items need to relate. I'd keep it very simple by using vases or pottery only.

The wine corks, sea anemone, striped vases and white vases just aren't relating to each other. You want an organic feel, but things are lined up.
