If I had the choice (building a home) I wouldn't choose ceilings taller than 10' in a kitchen, 9' is ideal to me. We have 8' ceilings throughout our home including in the kitchen and a vaulted ceiling in the living/dining area next to the kitchen (I think goes up to 12' at the peak). There is a beam running across the ceiling separating the spaces and beams on the cathedral living/dining ceiling as well meeting at the peak. None in kitchen or anywhere we have the 8' ceilings. Cabinets to ceiling 100% of the time if you can!

How y’all will your cabinets be??

I've seen some kitchen with super high ceilings and cabinets that go all the way up. I think it looks great, and very dramatic. As for being able to reach the top shelves -- that's best for those "once a year" type things.

Coming from a house that doesn't have enough storage, I say the more the merrier.

Emily, our kitchen ceiling is 10’, the bulkhead will bring the ceiling to 9’ for the cabinets only. The cabinets will go all the way to the 9’ dropped part and the beams will tie into the bulkhead above the cabinets.

Why don't you make the ceiling 27 feet high?

If you do stacked cabinets, you could go to the top of a 10’ ceiling. One of my SIL’s has that. Her shorter upper cabinets have glass doors are are lighted for displaying items. It looks really nice.

I wouldn't go higher than 10'. Use a header to define the kitchen from the rest of the house.
