Would this latch hold sliding barn doors together?

My sliding barn doors are constructed from knotty alder and have strap handles. I am looking for a flip latch to hold them together when closed. Would this gate latch work for my application?

It could, but it's not designed to hold it, and you would be taking a high risk of breaking it.
