Unfortunately I think quite a bit of dryer vents are connected like this. I would see if you could try and shorten the length of the duct as much as possible. You are correct about it having an unnecessary amount of turns. All that will do is create turbidity and reduce airflow.

So I shortened the duct and I think it looks better. They also used Duck tape to join the ends which I hear is a no-no, so I replaced it using Aluminium foil tape instead plus

a 4" worm gear clamp.

1000% better.

Oh yes. Much better! Your dryer and electric or gas bill will too!
