Tips for Starting a Vegetable Garden in AZ

I am a complete novice when it comes to gardening, and while I have had some very limited success with planting in pots, I am interested in starting a small vegetable garden in my backyard. I have a few questions I am hoping might get answered.

1: In terms of soil, I live in Surprise, AZ, and the soil in my backyard is just typical, desert dirt. Do I purchase potting soil, or some other type of bagged product, or can I plant directly in the ground? If so, what do I need to do to ensure the soil is nutritious for the plants?

2: I have heard that central AZ had two planting seasons. Knowing we are going in to the beginning of April, what vegetables/fruits would fair best and have the greatest chance of success?

3: What advice/information should I know going into this? What resources would one recommend that I can refer to when I have other questions?

Thanks in advance!
