If you don't get the answers you need here, track down your master gardener organization and ask them. In my area all master gardener activities are closed down for the duration of the corona virus outbreak but you might get lucky. They can provide you with all sorts of local, reliable information. Become familiar with the whole website, it will be a great resource for you.

Since you are starting from zero, so to speak, I urge you to read and study a little bit before you do anything. There are lots of books on basic gardening on Amazon, too.

This has been very helpful information, thank you all.

From my experience in central Phoenix I'll offer a couple of tips:

- Plant in-ground instead of a raised bed. Soil in raised beds dries out quickly.

- Install an automatic watering system (drip line is fine). I did not have this in place and keeping the raised bed sufficiently watered turned into a daily ordeal.

- Keep pests out. I'll post a pic of what worked well for me. The netting was from an army surplus store and is designed to be used over a sleeping cot. Worked great. The things laying on the bed were intended to keep the tomato plants from touching the ground. Turned out to be a big hassle.

Good luck. It's super fun to pull your food from the ground. The rewards can be stunning.
