Will need an inspection if changed. They do make a concealed sidewall sprinkler but they have a different take-out so it will require a large enough hole to recut the pipe to make it work. Make sure you find a licensed sprinkler contractor.

We have numerous fire sprinkler heads throughout our condo - it was code back in '98. A few people in our complex experienced flooding because after years these things can malfunction and just go off. Called our insurance company and they indicated we could shut it down since it costs them more money to fix up a flooded dwelling. Had a plumber come in and cut the pipe off, drain it and done. I would definitely check with your city and insurance company before doing this. The majority of our complex has shut theirs down. Oh, and we've just left them up!

To Seabornman - it was code when our unit was built in 1998. It is no longer code. My neighbor's sprinkler went off in the wintertime while they were down in FL - $100,000 worth of damage.

Then I suggest you ask the local permit department if it's ok to remove or disable the sprinkler system.
