Chickens scratching underneath the avocado tree

I have a flock of chickens and a large and established avocado tree in a part of the yard where i sometimes let the chickens access. I notice when i let the chickens access that yard, they end up digging a lot around the tree. With all the spider roots in this area, am i threatening the tree's health by allowing the chickens to scratch in this area? Is there anyway to prevent this other than completely shutting them out from this spot?
